2022/23 Amadou Onana

Slightly more disapointed him stopping and switching off for the goal rather than bringing down traore. One quick look to his left and he would have seen the wolves player totally unmarked. Maybe thats why we're 4th from bottom. All the players were ball watching, none had awareness of unmarked players arriving.
The lad simply can’t read the game to go with his many other faults, at the moment he is getting a game because of a very small and limited squad.

The problem with Onana is that he has a tendency to coast through games and you barely notice he's on the pitch. I guess it's normal for a 21 year old learning the game, but it hasn't helped our cause.

From a business point of view we have to sell him if we get a decent offer. He might develop into a superstar but also based on what we've seen there's a good chance he might not. We're not a top 10 team like Brighton who can nurture and wait for a talent to improve. We need better players in the squad right now.

We could just play him in his actual position...as a midfield anchor. He's not this all action player like Garner...im not sure why posters arent looking at his career and the stats...and 3 managers comments and putting 2 and 2 together here.

100%. Garner has come in and if you gave everyone the option of who should be first on the team sheet in that midfield area, 99% would say Garner.

We certainly need more than a 33m cheerleader next week thats for sure.

Theres a 3 man midfield. Its Onana + Garner...no Gana and a replacement for Doucoure.

That's a bit of an over reaction. You either buy seasoned players, but they have lower ceilings and not much chance in the way of selling on for more than what you paid or like in this case we have bought someone with all the right attributes to go to the top, the chance to generate a large profit but you have to expect those players to make more mistakes as they are still learning.

Although granted we did overpay for that promise in this case, but again that's due to how good he could eventually become. I'm sure we would make our money back on him and he deserves some patience.

Exactly. Even when the stats show what hes good at. Managers admit where he should be playing but state theyre using him further forward to improve his all round game.

He gets slated for not being a different type of player.

This is his first season anywhere as a starter and hes not had a settled preseason for 3+ seasons.

Only 21 playing out of position with ballers like Gana and Doucoure lol

For the price paid, we needed a player to come in and contribute almost immediately.

We got a high-potential apprentice.

When we go down, reality will bite and he'll go anyway.

If we somehow survive, his fee will be needed to pay for any rebuild. He's not what we need right now. Cash in time.

100%. We need to find another couple of Garners at the 10m-12m price range, or an Onana at 10-12m and not at the 30m starting price.

Whether we go up or down, we need to be far more savvy with whatever money we have available.

Not going to be the first player new to the EPL who takes time to settle in... Given he is in and out of the side match sharpness is going to be an issuse.

Bad style blaming this lad for Everton predicment.

i think he knows he’s goin in the summer and try’s to kid us with this cheerleading rubbish
I had a suspicion of that of a few weeks ago but was called out for it. He knows clubs are after him, and for all the cheer leading and crowd rousing, his impact on the pitch given his obvious ability is extremely limited which makes me think is a cynical application thing. I don’t blame him for being inconsistent - that happens with kids his age, but I’d be very surprised if he is not out the door in the summer and he knows it.

I'm certainly not blaming Onana. I'm blaming those who bought him. He is not what we needed. But he should fetch a few quid in the summer and then he can cheerlead a new set of supporters. Everyone's a winner.

We can blame him in a weekly basis if he is not putting a shift in. It’s just whether one thinks he is or not. I tend to think he’s not. I don’t think he’s deliberately being lazy, he just doesn’t seem to apply himself.

I think he’s too big of a luxury player for us in our situation. He just looks like he’s best suited to a top-6 side where collective hard graft of better players around him makes him look better despite him offering very little.
I haven’t seen him take a game by the scruff of the neck and drag us forwards. Unfortunately he’s been a passenger for us too many times.

If we can double our money on him (even before we pay Lille their 20% cut of profit) there isn't even a conversation to be had.

He is a prospect with a high ceiling - we could buy 2-3 prospects with high ceilings in different positions with the revenue generated from him.

Played fine and worked hard, should have took the foul but didnt.

The hate for him borders on sinister
I’m always having a go at him, and there isn’t anything sinister, I don’t see the world that way. If I slated Pickford, it’s not because he’s from Sunderland, it would be because I thought he was crap (which he isn’t).

Onana frustrates the hell out of me because people who know more about him than I ever will assure us he is destined for the absolute top. And he does appear to have everything to get there, seems a nice and very sharp lad. We’ve seen a handful of glimpses of real genuine technical quality and touch which someone of his size rarely has, and moments of chasing someone down for 30 yards before launching a risky leggy challenge. But it’s so so rare. And that’s literally it. Can’t shoot, often doesn’t shoot, no real assist threat, gets kicked a lot and doesn’t kick back etc etc.

And he’s not inexperienced at all. He’s been coached at the highest level probably since he was about 7, captained his country at youth level, is a full international and has played plenty of PL minutes now, but these minutes have made him steadily unarguably worse.

I’m his biggest critic because he is missing that vital ingredient that good consistent performers have, and he’s heading to be one of those ticking the years off his career, and I don’t want him to be 26 and on loan at Nantes. It would be huge waste for him and for Everton.

Mega-Over the top example, and the game has moved on, but he is faster, bigger, stronger, more intelligent, has better technical ability than someone like Roy Keane. Hasn’t a hope of getting close to his achievements with his current level of relaxed swagger regardless of which players surround him. He won’t get the chance because a less talented player with more venom will always get picked ahead of him. Took him a few weeks to get back in our toss midfield after he missed games, and he’s not earned a starting place back really other than by default. Whichever midfield position is supposedly his best, he should be displacing Gana, Garner or Doucoure surely if he is a proper player? Sticking peak Robbie Savage in our midfield this season to track and Harry people and we’d have conceded 5-10 less goals and would be no worse off at all in terms of assists or creativity, and that’s an utter embarrassment. He’s always my midfield example because he was crap, knew he was crap, but became a club hero and millionaire by sheer effort. I have no idea why a talented player would not apply this same effort and be the best they can be. I don’t get it. Why should only low quality sloggers try hard and focus on every second of every match and training session?

I’m aware it’s an awful deranged maniacal shout 😂, but I’d be far happier with him if he was just a crap but try-hard like Iwobi. You can’t really raise your talent ceiling, so just run around DO SOMETHING USEFUL FFS. But he’s a super talented coaster that doesn’t concentrate and I’m as annoyed for him as I am annoyed at him.

TL : DR - nothing sinister. Needs to do something when playing football matches.

Yep I’d agree with that
