2022/23 Amadou Onana

The lad simply can’t read the game to go with his many other faults, at the moment he is getting a game because of a very small and limited squad.
I’m always having a go at him, and there isn’t anything sinister, I don’t see the world that way. If I slated Pickford, it’s not because he’s from Sunderland, it would be because I thought he was crap (which he isn’t).

Onana frustrates the hell out of me because people who know more about him than I ever will assure us he is destined for the absolute top. And he does appear to have everything to get there, seems a nice and very sharp lad. We’ve seen a handful of glimpses of real genuine technical quality and touch which someone of his size rarely has, and moments of chasing someone down for 30 yards before launching a risky leggy challenge. But it’s so so rare. And that’s literally it. Can’t shoot, often doesn’t shoot, no real assist threat, gets kicked a lot and doesn’t kick back etc etc.

And he’s not inexperienced at all. He’s been coached at the highest level probably since he was about 7, captained his country at youth level, is a full international and has played plenty of PL minutes now, but these minutes have made him steadily unarguably worse.

I’m his biggest critic because he is missing that vital ingredient that good consistent performers have, and he’s heading to be one of those ticking the years off his career, and I don’t want him to be 26 and on loan at Nantes. It would be huge waste for him and for Everton.

Mega-Over the top example, and the game has moved on, but he is faster, bigger, stronger, more intelligent, has better technical ability than someone like Roy Keane. Hasn’t a hope of getting close to his achievements with his current level of relaxed swagger regardless of which players surround him. He won’t get the chance because a less talented player with more venom will always get picked ahead of him. Took him a few weeks to get back in our toss midfield after he missed games, and he’s not earned a starting place back really other than by default. Whichever midfield position is supposedly his best, he should be displacing Gana, Garner or Doucoure surely if he is a proper player? Sticking peak Robbie Savage in our midfield this season to track and Harry people and we’d have conceded 5-10 less goals and would be no worse off at all in terms of assists or creativity, and that’s an utter embarrassment. He’s always my midfield example because he was crap, knew he was crap, but became a club hero and millionaire by sheer effort. I have no idea why a talented player would not apply this same effort and be the best they can be. I don’t get it. Why should only low quality sloggers try hard and focus on every second of every match and training session?

I’m aware it’s an awful deranged maniacal shout 😂, but I’d be far happier with him if he was just a crap but try-hard like Iwobi. You can’t really raise your talent ceiling, so just run around DO SOMETHING USEFUL FFS. But he’s a super talented coaster that doesn’t concentrate and I’m as annoyed for him as I am annoyed at him.

TL : DR - nothing sinister. Needs to do something when playing football matches.
I’m sure you’re not the only one who sees Onana that way there are plenty of fans who recognise the player you have just described, at the moment for all the potential he may have he’s offering next to nothing in the fight against relegation and in a four or fives games before his illness or injury he was substituted, against Liverpool in a Derby game where you need fighters and battlers he nowhere to be seen before he was dragged off.

Whatever he does in the future I’ll always remember his form from his first season, he has been more of a hindrance than a help.

Genuine question, do you rate Sergio Busquets?

Now, think about him playing as an 'all action' box to box midfielder.

He wouldnt be very good would he?

Imagine him playing with Gana and Doucoure...it would be a total nightmare. He'd no doubt have great defensive stats but im confident he'd get stick just like Onana is doing.

Here we have a 21 year old who looks similar to Vieira in physicality but has always been a defensive midfielder:

Those comparisons were posted at the end of Jan. When playing with the likes of Gana, Davies and Iwobi.

Simply by looking at those stats, I see a midfield anchor. Certainly not a box to box 'all action' player.

Stats of course arent everything...but both Lampard and Dyche (as i keep repeating) admitted hes a defensive player but want to improve his all round game by playing him further forward.

Perhaps at some point we'll see him as a midfield anchor...with that 'all action midfielder (James Garner) who can do a 'bit of everything' alongside him...without Doucoure/Gana.

That's a bit of an over reaction. You either buy seasoned players, but they have lower ceilings and not much chance in the way of selling on for more than what you paid or like in this case we have bought someone with all the right attributes to go to the top, the chance to generate a large profit but you have to expect those players to make more mistakes as they are still learning.

Although granted we did overpay for that promise in this case, but again that's due to how good he could eventually become. I'm sure we would make our money back on him and he deserves some patience.

He’s had very very little impact on the team. Yesterday Gray should have started over him with a midfield of Gana, Garner and Doucoure.

He just hasn’t done enough to warrant the signing. I expected so so much more.

In a disappointing season he's been one of the biggest disappointments.

Was it Villa he came on against for debut? Powerful run causing chaos, 100% committed. My expectation levels probably haven't been raised so high and then crashed and burnt since Jimmy Mcs debut against Leeds all those years ago.

I've seen him ducking out of challenges when I expected him to be physically dominating the play.

If he was putting his body on the line at least I could respect it but he hasnt even done that.
