2022/23 Amadou Onana

He was also our man of the match when he came on for his cameo at Goodison, the whole game swung in our favour after he gave a dreadful free kick away for our first. He just charges about with absolutely no discipline or tactical nous and looks as technically gifted as Doucoure
Don't recall.

Do recall him scoring two belters against us away to Palace in a 3-1 win, where he absolutely bossed us.

Did you watch him play for England the other night? He was abysmal, looked completely out of his depth. He's barely started a game all season for the worst Chelsea team in years. Crap player.
Don't watch England.

He had a poor season in-and-out of a low moraled Chelsea team, where Felix, Kante, Mount and the rest all had shockers. He's barely played - as you say. Why would he have the form to play well for England?

Who knows how this lad will turn out. Maybe Dyche sees him as a luxury player we can make a profit on now to reinvest.

He will probably get advise from Woan/Stone on whether they feel it would be a gamble to keep him. He is talented but he is also inconsistent.
He’s also very young. Why do we always want to sell anything we have that’s half decent?

Neither do I, I’ve completely mis-remembered 😀. I think I just wanted people to remember another Micky Keggers special. He didn’t cover himself in glory for the Richarlison goal and Palace completely lost their shape when he came on(I do remember that!)

Onana is good at the moment, of course he can improve on lots of things (the same as Gallagher) but I think he has the potential to go much, much further than Gallagher. Onana‘s ceiling for me is beyond what a player/athlete like Gallagher could get to. I don’t think we can downgrade at all any more because there are very few players who are actually comfortable playing football, most are only suited to counter - attacking. Short, sharp bursts of high concentration passing (like Brighton) but cannot play possession based well enough against other Premier league teams.

Going forward, I want to have players who are comfortable with the ball and can also look after it instead of 100mph chasing (Maupey is basically my antithesis and he cost £15m when we had no money to spend, the least suitable forward for this squad of players I could think of. Garner at similar money is much more suited to the squad as he has a skillset to play anywhere for me, quick and is good with the ball)

I've repeated it 100x over the years on here. But I really do wish we'd "moneyball" our strategy.

1. Buy in a player, explain we're a stepping stone to a European club. (dont cry over this, they don't have a love for the club). He'll get the move, if he gives 100% every game and helps the team.

2. Sell the player for an inflated fee, he's performed well and top clubs want him. They have the money, we have a young talent.

3. Buy in 2 or 3 new players, showing them our strategy. Players become eager to move to us to help them grow and get the move they want.

4. Sell the 2 or 3 players over time and repeat.

There's so many reasons why this could and should work.

1, We firstly fall in line with FFP and report healthy finances.
2, We gain a reputation (like Brighton) for producing players and it's expected that teams will pay big money for our talent.
3, We develop relationships with the top clubs. Allowing us to pick their best of the rest.
4, Players actually want to join our club. Right now, why would you? If the club moved to this strategy, you'd have players desperate to join, all seeing how other talents got their move.
5, Each season we improve slightly. This isn't a quick win. But over time, we move into the top half, then begin to knock on the door of Europe. At this point, our talent goes for far bigger fees and we attract a higher quality of player. Eventually, players will no longer see us as a stepping stone, but a club to move to for Europe etc.

There's so much more to it and I've waffled on previously. But god I wish we could look at it and work on it. I feel it's the only viable strategy to us ever becoming a force again. Spending big didn't work. Fans wanting players to stay forever doesn't work. Old cast off's doesn't work. The academy doesn't work. This strategy is screaming to be implemented.
If only moshiri money met moyes eye for player…

He has neither the form or the talent to play for England. The gulf in class between him and the rest of the team was huge, he looked championship level.

He's not Chelsea or international level...but he's definitely our level and would improve us massively
I'm not so sure.

To me, he'd be the type of mistake that we keep telling ourselves to stop making. A player who hasn't made it at a bigger club. Comes here for a big fee on a high wage. Shows us why he didn't make it. Bleeds the club financially.

I want us to go for up-and-coming young players. Smaller transfer fees. Potential for increasing in value. If we don't have the scouting network to get these players, that should be our priority.

He's 23 and had an excellent season at Palace which is our level. Him Garner, Onana (if he stays) would be a midfield under 25 years old for example.

He'll go to another premier league club (West Ham for etc) and be very good. And the way Chelsea are on a mad firesale too, £30mill would be a snip for him.

The issue we have at the moment is that while it's ideal to bring in younger, cheaper, fresher talent...we don't have the foundations to develop them.

You may be right. I just fear that he may have been a one-season wonder and we will be lumbered with him if he doesn't recreate the form he showed at Palace.

I'm afraid he'll be like Schneiderlin, who looked fantastic at Southampton. I also don't see what he really brings. He's a nice tidy player, but I don't see much more than that. Not a battler. Not a goalscorer. Not a big presence. Not a leader. I also think he doesn't want to play for us.

I appreciate this is a very glass-half-empty view. I've just seen it so many times with us.
