The one thing I will say is I do think he can take more control of games, I think he has a really high ceiling but think we've only scratched the surface with him and the past 2 months is the first time we've started to see what he's about. Hope he bounces back from his head loss mid week.

I fear given our financial situation he could be dispensable in the summer for a lofty fee. Hope not, but that is the reality.

People miss penalties. Zico, Socrates, and Platini all missed penalties in the same match. Baggio missed a penalty and lost a World Cup. Uli Hoeneß lost a European Championship by missing a penalty. Great players miss penalties. The issue is not missing a penalty. The issue was the manner of the penalty. Whatever the logic of what he tried to do, it was an unprofessional penalty. That's what sticks in people's craws.

Nevertheless, it's over now and we must move on. Onana needs to start performing again now and putting on some displays. That's how to recover from this.

Yup. There's been some mental OTT reactions, but I don't agree people almost trying to take a moral high ground and wonder why people are so annoyed. Of course people are, it was a conscious, unprofessional decision he made and it backfired spectacularly.

Still, we support him going forward and providing he puts this in the past and performs on the pitch I'm sure it'll get forgotten about. But yes, he has lost some trust and needs to re-earn it.

People are entitled to be livid. I mean, I don't want any harm to come to the player, but he has royally cheesed me off with that penalty and, frankly, not that he will care, has gone right down in my estimations. But, as disappointing as the missed opportunity is, it's recoverable. It is what it is. He needs to show up on Saturday and perform. Get it out of his system. We're rightly sore about missing out on a cup semi and the buzz of a two-legged derby semi, but he'll get people back on side with good performances.

It would probably be wrong to shackle a young, overconfident player too much, but I hate those penalties. It should be about power and placement. Kicking a football properly where you aim it! Why choose a penalty “style” as Dyche put it that takes it away from footballing skill, power and placement and makes it a challenge between striker and keeper to see who blinks first? To me, choosing that style means you care just as much about how you are perceived to have scored, rather than the most important thing, actually scoring. If the keeper doesn’t blink you’ve reduced your chances to 50:50. Madison found that out too. Smashing it blindfolded would have a better chance in that situation.

Sounds like Onana was scoring them in training, but I bet the coaching staff were cringing. And given it became an abnormally important penalty, I’d have liked Tarks or Pickford etc to urge him to put his foot through it. Could have helped the lad out there. At least make it hit the keeper full blast in the face in saving it and take no flak.

Facts are, our two fairly agricultural centre backs walked up and dispatched two confident unsaveable spot kicks. He should be light years ahead technically as a £60m midfielder, but made himself look very silly.

Its great learning for him. I’m often his biggest critic, I think he has been sub-par far far more times than he has been even just good. BUT, he has been much better this season and has genuinely affected our points tally with effective contributions. Some fantastic weight of pass, and willing to put the ball at risk more to keep us moving forward. Didn’t used to like hearing he would do well in a better team, we have often carried him! But he is definitely showing signs that maybe he would/will.

Would be nice for him to put in a monster performance this weekend.

Spot on.

For me it wasn’t just about a very poor taken penalty but how he played during the game, it was another game were he went missing for large parts of the game including the first twenty minutes, it took me that long to know he was even playing,he’s has some better games this season but none were he takes the game by the scruff of the neck and dictates the game.

I keep hearing fans talk about how good he is with young supporters and other off the field aspects of his personality, I’m only interested what he does on the field and he doesn’t impress all that often, what he becomes in the future nobody knows it’s what he is playing like now that concerns me.

Difference is that Onana contributes very little to our goal tally ( or assists), and I can count his motm performances on 3 fingers. It's not just about his one penalty miss.

Have you thought that he is not that kind of player. There are some players who contribute to tactics and allow other players the ability to score.

Personally, I see a player who gets around the pitch and with more experience could easily play a more Carsley role in the team. Plenty of very good midfield players in history who did not come up with the attacking stats that you are looking for.

I accept if you don't think he is any good at any midfield attribute but just associating him with one aspect is the wrong way to go about analysing him as a player during open play.
