2023/24 Amadou Onana

Our best player for me today, at least three of his passes set up chances that any other team with players who actually know how to score would have taken them.

Spot on ;) im not sure how this is disputed.

Actually thought he did play well today, some of the balls out wide were great.

Midfield 3 of onana gana and doucoure does not work though

Has to be Onana + Garner and if we get Gnonto him in place of Doucoure.

3 players who can pass and drive forwards with the ball.

Lets just leave it Zat, its pointless, Onana could take a dump in the centre circle and you would praise his technique.

In quoting your post again blueloon as i want to as Goat if he saw any of these passes.

It appears Goat youve mistaken Gana for Onana which is quite a feat.

Decent game. He can do better.

His willingness to pass forward was the main difference today. A few Hollywood passes out of nowhere, the same situation he would’ve chosen sideways or backwards last season.

Hia tracking back is still a concern. Closest to Jimenez and did nothing to stop his header.
The last point is the worry. He did look forwards and made some great passes today but he steadfastly refuses to look around himself, know where opposing players are, judge where they are heading and whether it’s his responsibility, and if it is FOLLOW the run.

He failed to do this so many times last year with midfielders scoring from the edge of our 6 yard box. He escapes all blame because he is stood 20 yards away with his hands on his head when the ball goes in, but 5 seconds before the ball layers scores they are within 2 feet of Onana and everyone can blame Keane/Godfrey/Gana/Myko etc

Oh right, 1 person agrees with you, shall I post the other 30 or so posters that agree with me?

As I say Zat, move on, theres not a chance in hell we agree on this.

@Zatara

I like him. He's going to be a fine player. But he doesn't contribute anything in the opposition half and the club has no money.

With a combination of Doucouré, Gana, Garner and even in an extreme situation, Iwobi, we can lose Onana and end up much better for it if we get attacking players in.

Yes the above players mentioned are all crap, but if we can get some goals in the side they are likely to be enough to keep us up.

If the money was there we wouldn't have been starting with Maupay today.

We have no other sellable assets that will generate anywhere near the funds we need to plug in our many gaps.

£50m Onana out, £20m Gnonto in, leaves us £30m to get two strikers.

If the alternative is keeping Onana and failing to bring in goalscorers, then we're going down.

I don't see what choice the club has.

Im merely asking how you missed his passing in the first half.

The 3 passes mentioned (also iwobis cross field pass after the run) were the best in the game.

I’m actually with Goat on this one. Onana had a few nice moments passing as you pointed out, but otherwise still doesn’t take the game by the scruff. He wasn’t bad just anonymous, which was his major issue towards the end of last season. With his talent and size he should be much more noticeable and impactful.

Gana had a really nice game, he cleaned up everything as he did towards the end of last season as Onana started to disappear more. He shouldn’t be allowed to shoot, and is still very one dimensional, but he’s doing his job super well in my opinion.

I didnt miss the passes, when he could be bothered to get involved he was ok.

Its just the other 88minutes of his performance I object to.

If you think 3 passes in a game is worth 100m, then good luck to you.

1: Hes a DM being misused. Even so 1st half he was our most threatening and creative player

2: Only Gana (cant pass and has no positional sense) and Garner are CMs. We play 2 so need 4.

3: Selling Onana for a less than Lavia is insane. Also youve not included the 20% profit to Lille.

We sell Onana and were probably going to get relegated with Dyche's player selections.

We can utilise the loan market for a squad rotation midfielder.

I merely plucked £50m out of thin air, if sold it would hopefully be a fair bit more and leave us with £50m to spend after the Lille payment.

It's more important to get wingers and attackers in now than have a luxury midfielder who doesn't score goals. The chances he passed up on last season were awful.

New style of play needs to be pass the ball out wide to new winger, get it in the box to new striker.

We just need to survive, and that's imo our best shot.

It’s the same story every game he plays, in and out the game, he would have to impact a game a lot more to justify anyone spending £50m on him.
Unfortunately for us the teams who spend money, actually scout players and won’t be hoodwinked so easily.

Misuse in what way? He can’t be an effective defensive midfielder if he jogs around most of the time. Casemiro did lots of running and chasing playing as a DM, his price tag would be close to 80m in his prime. onana is nowhere near his level.

Agreed, I would snap your hand off for 50m.

Yeah sure, he MIGHT be worth more in the future, but for now we need to win games and he has zero impact in our ability to do that.
