2023/24 Amadou Onana

Listening to people on here they would slate all of our midfielders. Yet they are the reason we should have scored 5-6, which the forwards couldn't finish. Our midfield is actually our strongest point and Onana is a positive part of that.

Ootherwise it makes no sense to say we have no attack, only 2 real defenders, and yet can be far better than a mid table team.

But anonymous isn’t awful. It’s an absence of anything. Patterson was awful.

Not defending Onana, as I think he should have done much more in the second half, but he was anonymous then. First half, he was okay. Just okay.
Anonymous is like playing with one less player, that’s what it’s like with Onana. Yet he’s supposed to be a player that can deliver due to the importance of his position, yet he fails to on the majority of his performances. Today was him picking up where he left off last season and it really isn’t good enough.

He's never even threatened to score a goal for us yet has he. For all of his size and physicality, he's not what we need right now. We apparently have no money and need to bring in at least one more striker and at least one winger, arguably a proper number 10 as well. If the money isn't there, get Onana auctioned off as quickly as possible this week. He's our only sellable asset.
He needs, imho, specific 1-2-1 coaching from a former midfield general (whomever that may be) the way DCL got specific training from Duncan. He needs to be taught aggression and control. Duncan did it well for DCL, something similar wouldn’t go amiss for Onana as he has all the physical tools to do well. Imagine Keane getting hold of him. (I think the modern game may have passed Reid by)

He needs to do a lot more in all honesty. He should be everywhere on that pitch.

I think they need to think about his positioning though and how they're going to get the best out of him.

I agree it’s not good enough but he’s not actively damaging us the way playing Maupay up front is, or Patterson’s panicking is. He does need to do more, and consistently from beginning to end, but I’d keep him in the team until we replace him with someone else with his ability who does do all that. We’ve not got the luxury of dropping him right now.

Just sell him as we need the money to buy attacking players and it doesn't look like any are imminent due to us scrimping, saving and looking for freebies. He's our only sellable asset, and actually rarely does anything of note anyway. Certainly has never once threatened to score for us in over a year which is absolutely woeful. To be honest I rarely even notice him on the field as he's mostly just waltzing about letting the game pass him by. A couple of decent passes today in the first half doesn't get him off the hook from me, he was garbage overall as he has been since at least the start of 2022.

I think the criticism comes from what we all think he could be, but he's not there yet.

I did think some of his passing was very good today though. That has come on a lot since he first arrived. With a competent striker, he probably has an assist today.

Didn't see as many defensive actions from him today, but talk of him being awful or anonymous is mad to me. Thought he was one of our better players, alongside Gueye.

I think I’d rather play a winger on the right, move Garner into the middle and start Onana on the bench as he doesn’t offer anything to improve us right now. He has all the attributes, but he isn’t using them.

I think Garner would be more effective there but he’d also be more effective replacing Patterson and that might be the more urgent requirement. He deffo shouldn’t be on the right long term but who else would you put there right now?

Can’t believe* we’re having conversations like this after the first match. Feels like last season never ended, just kept rolling on.

*I can believe it. BK’s still stinking the place out.
