I think Garner would be more effective there but he’d also be more effective replacing Patterson and that might be the more urgent requirement. He deffo shouldn’t be on the right long term but who else would you put there right now?
Can’t believe* we’re having conversations like this after the first match. Feels like last season never ended, just kept rolling on.
*I can believe it. BK’s still stinking the place out.
The last point is the worry. He did look forwards and made some great passes today but he steadfastly refuses to look around himself, know where opposing players are, judge where they are heading and whether it’s his responsibility, and if it is FOLLOW the run.
He failed to do this so many times last year with midfielders scoring from the edge of our 6 yard box. He escapes all blame because he is stood 20 yards away with his hands on his head when the ball goes in, but 5 seconds before the ball layers scores they are within 2 feet of Onana and everyone can blame Keane/Godfrey/Gana/Myko etc
no.He was crap.
Thats your first mistake. Never, ever go full Goat. I didnt think Gana was good at all compared to both Onana and Gana either side of him.I’m actually with Goat on this one. Onana had a few nice moments passing as you pointed out, but otherwise still doesn’t take the game by the scruff. He wasn’t bad just anonymous, which was his major issue towards the end of last season. With his talent and size he should be much more noticeable and impactful.
Gana had a really nice game, he cleaned up everything as he did towards the end of last season as Onana started to disappear more. He shouldn’t be allowed to shoot, and is still very one dimensional, but he’s doing his job super well in my opinion.
Because Gana and Doucoure ahead have no passing ability.Him and Gana in the middle is so pedestrian and lacking any point whatsoever IMO.
You're seeing him playing in a different role. As an anchor he doesnt need to charge around like Gana, he can sit...Misuse in what way? He can’t be an effective defensive midfielder if he jogs around most of the time. Casemiro did lots of running and chasing playing as a DM, his price tag would be close to 80m in his prime. onana is nowhere near his level.
Its comical that he keeps saying hes a DM, he watches the game pass him by.
Probably saying how amazing Iwobi was in comparison lolNear the end someone was giving him some abuse and he reacted to it. The lad must have good hearing as he was a few yards from the touchline but 3 times at least he told the fan to f off.
P*ss poor from an Everton player to an Everton Fan regardless of what was being said and just as important it showed a complete lack of concentration from Onana as he should have been 100% focused on the game not on the crowd. Especially when were 1 -0 down at the time.
Need to have quality around him and for me that would be Garner and hopefully Gnonto in for Doucoure...players he can link with. His best is easily the best that anyone in our squad can produce, his biggest challenge is being able to do it across 90 minutes.
Every time he got involved today he produced quality.
Can be a £80m player, but it’s up to him to be able to get involved and want to be involved for a full 90 mins.
As it stands, the game goes by him for way too long.
Indeed.1 game in and our fans are already toxic.
Thats what happens when he has the ball.Created goalscoring opportunities with a couple of beautiful crossfield passes in the first half. Frustrating that he's so peripheral most of the time
Iwobi was ineffective, indecisive and lacking in conviction.Iwobi was better. Iwobi.
No, its called being inclusive and highlighting the salient points posters have made to show that their view has been heard.I mean you’re doing it again highlighting words to make your own sentences up out of what people write I now understand how we get some of your replies. Out of the current squad you’d have to say Iwobi for his work rate, then for the last 20/30 min bringing on Gray (if we keep him), or Dobbin.
You’re right, though; we really shouldn’t be having this conversation now. We should have got a new right winger in early and they should be playing.
Starting to think that part of this fanbase is what is dragging the club down. Who wants to play for Everton these days ?What a fanbase, pathetic
I can tell you right now I most certainly cannot stand Iwobi lolIwobi was ineffective, indecisive and lacking in conviction.
He is an attacking player who cant shoot.
Aside from one cross field pass after a run he didnt actually produce anything noteworthy.
But because he looks busy and 'exciting' people like him...a bit like Adama Traore. Its the same every game with him.
do you realise you’re defending your ego rather than justifying Onana? In your eyes he is flawless, or maybe your ego is flawless, I’m not sure which is which anymore.Theres clearly an issue with Gana's positioning. Hes being used (as with Lampard) as a DM with no positional sense.
Onana should be a sitting anchor midfielder to see everything going on around and ahead of him.
My take is that he's in 'no mans land' and as both Dyche and Lampard have said its to improve his 'all round game'.
We see his driving forward on the ball and improved passing and attacking awareness on the ball increase but...hes always been and should always be the anchor.
no.

...you didnt see the likes of Carrick charging around. People have compared Garner to Carrick when hes more like a Owen Hargreaves.
Onana would be in the Carrick role (though different styles) and Garner as the Hargreaves. Quality pairing which has never been used.
Youve not seen him play as a DM so how would you know?
Probably saying how amazing Iwobi was in comparison lol

'Worried'?Anyone worried that spurs will flex that 100 mil Kane money and go after Onana with some of it? Levy hates us and would love to take our best players
No, he is not a well man.Is Zat ok in here?
Wasn’t anonymous had a good first half then went missing in second that’s not what top players do. I like him think he has bags of potential but right now and last season that’s all it is potential. Needs to remain consistent for the whole game goes from looking really good to doing nothing. I’m saying sell and that’s only if the money is being spent up top to make us stronger I think someone can fill in CM yes makes us weaker in the middle but trying to get a goal scorer in and someone more creative is critical. I’m not toxic just realistic mate I don’t get too attached to a player and can stand back and see them for what they are or offer no matter how much I like/dislike them. No, its called being inclusive and highlighting the salient points posters have made to show that their view has been heard.
Youre being toxic.
"Sell for £60mil to a top club" or "Hes anonymous/poor".
Cant have it both ways.
He will be fine as long as Onana and Patterson stay in the team, I reckon he loves Chermiti already fits his profile young player give it a week and he will be worth £30mIs Zat ok in here?
We've got to get him into games somehow.
A complete passenger yesterday, I couldn't understand the role he had - not sure if thats on him, or Dyche.
He's 21, he's going to blow hot and cold - as much as I rate him, as much as I think he's money in the bank - we shouldn't have spent what we did on him when we had limited funds and no actual centre forward. THELWELLLLLLLLL
