I mean as a kid you didnt even need a footy pitch, just a small piece of grass/concrete and some coats for goals, so dont understand why they claim its a rich mans sport in murica, do footys cost like 200 dollars or something?

Depends on local politics, but most schools here are public, and most school grounds are public, so end up being used as public parks when no school activities are happening. Most schools in my area don't have goals, but all you need is a bit of grass to play, right?

We do for sure. Youth footy is huge, but as kids grow up, and there is a time to choose a sport the best athletes choose the gridiron, basketball, and baseball. By high school age footy is played by rich kids and those of latino descent.

Huge gap in the system between youth/fun soccer and competitive soccer. Parents with means line their kids up in club soccer starting young.

I mean if you don't live in a decent sized city, it highly likely that playing footy for your school is not even possible because it's not even offered. So that leaves playing club ball the only option. Club ball costs money that a lot of parents don't have.

You look at a guy like Clint Dempsey who grew up in Nacanowhere, TX. He played club footy in Dallas. That's a six hour round trip commute.

It's far better these days, but still takes $$. FCD has what is considered one of the better MLS academies, but also their youth network stretches far and is even in our market (through extension). Whether the local FCD-branded product is any good is something too see, but it still co$t$ and if your kid gets identified as talented, you've got to move to a youth team out of area to keep playing. So yeah, it's still broken and ignore my comment re: it's better.

What time is there now.

Driving through Memphis one time I saw kids in one of the poorer parts of town playing in an open field using backpacks as goals. It was really cool and also kind of sucked because the American system pretty much guarantees none of those kids can even get to college level playing soccer. I don't really know how you can get money out of a system that most of the decision makers are in for money though.

about 12 years ago my friend got hired as a teacher and they wanted him to coach city league middle school soccer. he never played the game. So he calls me up because I watch it on the TV. "what should I do?" So I go ok just put whoever looks like he could kick a ball and run decent at striker. maybe a couple guys who look fast on the wing. "so what should I do in practice?" I go uhhhhh, try shooting the ball at the goal?

He calls me back after the 1st game. WE WON 3-0!

I have a friend that played and knows tons more than me who teaches at a poor neighborhood high school and every year most of his girls have never kicked a ball.
