Ok, your point is, going on his last 2 seasons its more likely he'd be a failure than a success, i get it. I'd say, if Barcelona thought he had all it takes to be a success and it didnt happen for what ever reason, he's a better bet than anyone you could name, at this stage to fill our midfield.

That doesnt make sense though.

How can a player coming off a crap two seasons be a better bet than ANYONE you could name to improve our midfield?

Surely all the midfielders in Europe who are as talented or more talented than Gomes, and havent just had two bad seasons, would be a better bet?

Id prefer Nzonzi having watched him be boss as boss can be for Sevilla for quite some time. Would give us 2 or 3 good seasons and quality in the middle we havent seen in a long time.

I would definitely take Gomes on loan...you would be crazy not to. There is a decent chance he fails and is complete rubbish but the small chance that he re-discovers his potential is worth it. I definitely wouldn't buy him but a loan with an option to buy would be decent business.

Nzonzi is not coming to us. He wants Arsenal or he stays. Of the quality midfielders available at this stage. Gomes is the best.

He polarizes opinion but I don't believe it's a question of quality but fit & waning confidence. He started somewhat brightly although he was moved around all over the pitch initially (Even playing RB). Like Mina more recently, he has publicly revealed that he has struggled with confidence due to the pressure to deliver & play at the level/rhythm of his teammates. It's definitely a question of fit ultimately (I think he is suited to a counter attacking side) but he has been incapable of putting it all together consistently. I can't even count the number of times he has mistimed the final pass or roofed a golden scoring opportunity - so his confidence suffered probably as much as his teammates probably began to lose confidence in him as well. The body language on the pitch for him & teammates at times was painful to watch

I like him, I was excited when he was bought (A bit out of the blue at the time) since he was so impressive at Valencia (Key really) and did not like the criticisms he suffered from fans & pundits when he struggled. Integrating into a team like this, it is never as easy as fans would like to believe. Definitely has to move on because I don't believe he will thrive until he moves on, gets regular minutes and rebuilds that confidence to express himself on the pitch. For me, he's a true box to box midfielder - I'll be rooting for him because he's handled himself brilliantly through all of it

I’ve been lucky enough to see Barca 4 times live in the Nou Camp and Gomes played on three of those occasions. Believe me, we need to stay clear. He’s very, very poor. The Barca fans can’t stand him. He’s painfully slow. He’d be a downgrade on Klaassen. Too many people getting excited because he plays for Barca.

Quite.
Plus, let's not forget that Marco had Watford playing better stuff than we did last year, using Tom Cleverley to make things tick.
Togger is as more about chemistry, confidence and blending than it is about star names and reputations.

Yeah, I'm really struggling to find the issue here. So he wasn't playing ahead of Rakitic or Busquets or Iniesta. Honestly, maybe the issue is that he doesn't fit in that possession based model. The guy can carry the ball, he can move it upfield. That's not really encouraged at Barca. I have a concern that he's not physical enough, although he is physical to be clear. He can knock guys off the ball, he's a big guy. I think he fits pretty darn well in the Silva model. And look, when he gets healthy, he'll push Morgan out of the lineup. We'll also recoup his fee when we sell McCarthy or Schneiderlin in January.
My (probably wrong) perception of Silva's preferred style is counter-attack, requiring an ability to win the ball and advance very quickly. All the reports I've read about Gomes mention he's quite slow, so I'm puzzled as to why the interest. Although being able to make a killer pass to (say) Walcott would be an advantage I think Silva wants everyone to be able to attack.

You can kick a ball faster than you run you know mate. Paul Scholes wasn't rapid, but could put the ball exactly where he wanted it.

So you are saying that a player, who has just had a shocker for most of the last two seasons with his own fans groaning at his every mistake and roaring their disapproval when he was subbed on, is guaranteed to improve us?

No chance of it not working out?

Im afraid you are wrong. Any player who has had the two seasons he has just had would most definitely carry a risk with him. He has shown recently that he has issues handling pressure.....Goodison Park after the team has a crap start to the season and a weak minded player aint cutting it would definitely be a pressure situation for him. Going on what Ive seen of him for two years id expect him to struggle with that.

As i said in a previous post....if he is happy and confident then he could very well bring some good qualities to the team....the problem is there is no guarantee of that, especially not if we start slowly this season.

Of course if he signs I hope it turns out to a brilliant signing, but I would give it a 40% chance of working out based on what I've watched every week of him.

Never happens at Goodison, he'll be grand.;)

You don’t live on Las Ramblas fella. You’re from the States. Go to bed.

It's a fair point.
If we do sign him then I'll trust Brands and Silva's judgment much more than my own perception.
That he's got great technical ability seems to be without doubt.

It,s a loan so no risk...I expect Barca want this to happen as they hope Silva can fix him for them next season.
