2018/19 Andre Gomes

He's as big and powerful as Pogba. There was an article in the Guardian last week comparing the two, and asking why Pogba gets called big and strong and Gomes skilful when they're the same size and do similar things (to different levels of success) b

He is kinda nasty. If he played for the rs, we'd be berating then heck out of him. He's more than a bit dirty. He doesn't half get involved with the roughing up of the opposition players - somewhat too clumsily for me, he always seems like a yellow card or red card waiting to happen once he's at it.

Not being nasty is one criticism that can be aimed at our Andre.

Thats the thing, he looks like hes purposely trying to get a card the way he does it so blatently...

Cant see the same power as Pogba myself...hes a tall chap but think Pogba has more to him when hes powering forward.

I wonder really why hes totally tailed off.

He should be in the deeper role in my opinion. You would expect more goals/assists from a more advanced player.

Definitely...i think its a bit peculiar myself how such a good passer cant hit the goal

That Tottenham game he got a knock and has played every game since.

It's his first season in the Prem, after playing inconsistently (in terms of appearances) for the last two seasons.

He had four months out with a hamstring injury.

The team on the whole has been in crap form playing with little confidence.

It happens.

He seems to be more a deep playmaker. Like Pirlo or Xavi position.

I can see why 2 players full of energy and running each side of him would work well.

Davies and Doucoure for example.

So no number 10, but we need a top striker.

This. I agree totally. It's like finding an abandoned car, sticking in some new oil and whizz around for a while then wonder why it's no going so great after a couple of days and not considering it had been sitting to rust for a few years. He needed bringing in slowly to get the best out of him long term.

Gomes left Pogba on his arse last game, proper. And that was a result of Pogba going at him thinking he was a soft touch.

I have absolutely no qualms in saying that our Andre can handle himself on the pitch. If he was bit more snide and less obvious, it'd serve him and I hope us well in the long term.

He's the type of player you build a side around.

I know his form has dropped off but it's because of a few factors - the dynamic of the squad, adjusting to a new league, fatigue. All valid excuses for him, and I'm normally loathe to make excuses for players.

But the quality he has is evident for all to see. Again, stop worrying about what he doesn't do (he isn't going to run around like a headless chicken throwing stupid tackles) and instead focus on what he does do.

He's the right age, the right level of quality and to my eyes has the right attitude. For me, he's our number one target to bring in in the summer, even ahead of a striker.

Lol i had a good laugh reading the comments on here. You all have Gomes very wrong, he is not a physical player in the slightest despsite his height. He has a tendancy to struggle once he's pressed by tough opposition. If everytging was perfect we would not be loaning him so play Andre to his strengths or don't play him at all

Not being funny mate but if you're a Barcelona fan we've probably seen more of him than you have, so we can probably work out how he plays ourselves.

I wanted Gomes well before he was even mentioned. I thought he'd be perfect in terms of his ability to carry the ball forward, to pass it, to link defense to offense. I think he's still been effective in that role. HOWEVER, my major reservation was that he might not be physical enough - both strong, agile, fast - to contribute on the defensive end. Unfortunately, in that regard, especially the past month or so, he's been WORSE than advertised. He does NOT get into passing lanes when we don't have the ball. He's been a step slow and fouls CONSTANTLY, which is a terrible thing for a team that struggles on set pieces.

The Huddersfield game was a bit of an anomaly, although I appreciate him not fouling as he was getting bypassed in midfield, as we were down a man. But in the two prior games he had I believe one interception and no tackles. He HAS to be better on defense. His position has to be better. You can't rely on Gana to support both sides of our wide attack, to snuff out EVERY counter attack, he simply isn't THAT good.

I still think that buying him is a no-brainer, regardless of his recent dip. The December-January schedule looks to have taken its toll on him, but that was to be expected given how little he's played since joining Barcelona.

He could have done with being rotated in recent weeks, but unfortunately he's the only midfielder at the club who can pass a ball.

I liked how he played as a deeper pivot the other night. This is the thing about Gana in that position he does the clearing up well but he can't dictate a game like Gomes can.
