2018/19 Andre Gomes

What bothers me about Gana going is in a 4-3-3 I think Gomes could be great in that role that Davies (or Gylfi) occupied today, with Gana able to sweep up behind.

If we do get another midfielder in, has to be a sitter, to mean we can play Gomes further forward and get the best out of him that way.

He isn't a defensive mid against quality opposition, that's for sure.

I do think he did well tonight, though.

Got to be honest Toff...

I think we all went (i know i did) overboard on him.

If we are aiming to rebuild the centre in the summer and if it came down to Silvs wanting a deep playmaker and 2 box to box players, would you want him in there?

For me, i dont think hes suited to the deep position and for the box to box positions I would want big powerful players or at least those who give the opposition a hard time, not only with their ball skills.

The top sides have a bit of nasty in the centre and i think were lacking that.

On the season overall, i wouldnt sign him.

The big bustling box to box players probably lack the composure Gomes has on the ball. There is nothing wrong with one of those box to box players being creative and playmaker like, which Gomes is.

If the price is right, no question we should sign him.

Disagree with the bit about top clubs having a bit of nasty in midfield. The top two clubs have played with ball playing deep lying centre mids, sure they can put a tackle in etc but they protect the defense firstly by keeping hold of the ball. Even chelsea are moving along that track with kante, who's arguably the best old school dm in the world, moved further forward to accomadate jorginho who's better on the ball.

Gomes should have all the qualities on the ball to do what's needed in that position, it's just his mobility that could hurt us. Either way we should be able to keep hold of the ball better with gomes playing in that spot rather than gana, just winning it back may be an issue imo

I'd have him as one of the two box to box players, yeh, definitely.

I think against sides as poor as Huddersfield there'd not be much wrong with him playing a deeper role either, although he isn't a playmaker in the sense that someone like Neves can act as.

You can't just have two big Ndombele types, you need a bit of a balance.

Ideally a 4-3-3 is made up of a defensive mid (either a sitter who can also dictate from deep, or a player like Gana who can buzz about and screen the defence. A mix of the two is ace, obviously), a box to box and then a playmaker who will join in with the attack. I think he can fit into two of those roles pretty well.

He's had as many good games as bad and proved when he's fully fit, playing with confidence, just how good he can be. It's not really getting carried away. That derby he ran the show on his own for a good hour, for example.

I think hes come in, had a few very good games which amazed us all then has gradually dropped off to such an extent that if he played this way from the beginning he wouldnt be so much in favour...hasnt got the pace or physicality to dominate but has shown hes a good passer.

I think he'd be in favour purely because he's one of the very few players we have who can keep the ball, which helps.

The reason the dreaded 4-2-3-1/4-2-2-1-1 thing Silva was playing started to crack was because Gomes' form dipped but also we just weren't holding it up front, meaning all of the onus was on Gomes to drive it forward through midfield.

I think without Gana + Gomes we have an opportunity here.

I just posted in the transfer thread who id go for (or similar) so wont duplicate.

Gomes though i think isnt whats needed.

He's as big and powerful as Pogba. There was an article in the Guardian last week comparing the two, and asking why Pogba gets called big and strong and Gomes skilful when they're the same size and do similar things (to different levels of success) b

He is kinda nasty. If he played for the rs, we'd be berating then heck out of him. He's more than a bit dirty. He doesn't half get involved with the roughing up of the opposition players - somewhat too clumsily for me, he always seems like a yellow card or red card waiting to happen once he's at it.

Not being nasty is one criticism that can be aimed at our Andre.
