If the £25m-£35m quoted is an accurate representation of what Barca are after we should have that side of it agreed by now, surely? In today’s market that’s cracking value based on his overall showing for us.

Assume it’s just a case of letting the player have a holiday, and letting his agent try to drum up as much cash as he can by creating a bidding war in the media.

Confident we’ll get him, but that confidence will erode the longer the summer goes on if he’s not posing provocatively with an Everton scarf on or before July 1st.

Unless Brands doesn't rate him as worth that and likes other players better. I know some here love the guy, but he's far from a perfect player.

Very far from perfect; he was one of the chief culprits during our horrendous patch, but either side of it he looked excellent and I’d personally say that the fee quoted would constitute a good deal. Marco seems to want him as well, so unless Brands has a very viable alternative lined up I’d hope we’d be ready with a sack of cash and some beard wax.

To be clear, I'm sure they are going to acquire more than just Gomes for central midfield. He'd be fine for 25M or so. But we need a lot more than just Gomes, Gana, Sigurdsson, Davies, Vlasic, Schneiderlin and whoever else we have in the middle. That's mid table at best. I'm also assuming Brands is going to do his best to move Schneiderlin, McCarthy, Besic, and acquire a younger CM/DM (maybe Sosa) and a first team CM/DM that can do some of what Gana can do as well as contribute more to the offense and be a physical force a la Doucoure. That's not Gomes. That's going to cost 40M at least and we still need a CB and a CF.

Yeah, I don't buy that for a second. Sigurdsson can and has played deeper down the stretch when Schneiderlin came into the team. The issue is that Schneiderlin isn't that great and when he does play, no way Gomes is playing over Gana and he doesn't create enough to replace Sigurdsson. If we had a better 6 or at least another CM/DM that could play along with Gana, Sigurdsson would have no problem playing deeper. It's not like he doesn't contribute defensively or have decent positional awareness. But you can't play Gomes with Gana as twin CMs/DMs again a decent team even though Silva has tried. It's just not that effective a combination.
