2019/20 Andre Gomes

Gomes had a shocker but I will give him credit for not hiding , he kept trying to do the right things but it only kept getting worse.

I don't think Gomes is a terribly strong character , I don't think he is a leader and needs somebody of that ilk to play alongside. Somebody who will take responsibility for leadership and let Gomes just play football. Gueye was a good foil for him and I think Delph will be too.

I just wish we had kept McCarthy and sold Schneiderlin.

With Schneiderlin behind him, correct? There have been some crazy shouts for 3 man midfield without a defensive midfielder. Gomes is already a terrible defensive player.

Schneiderlin isn't really a defensive midfielder either. He plays deep but is more of a deep playmaker than anything. He doesn't really get involved in the dirty side of things.

We lack an engine in midfield now. Delph will hopefully provide that if and when he gets fit.

Tomorrow, we should have no need for a specialist DM.

Unfortunately, due to Gbamin's injury, we're gonna have to do something to avoid MS and AG playing together again.

It's far too one-paced.

Sure he's a defensive mid. He sits back behind the back line and breaks up play. He doesn't create anything, although the pass to Coleman was lovely that set up DCL.

Regardless of how you categorize him, SOMEONE has to make a tackle or pick off a pass. He does. He's not a good athlete and should've been replaced, but he actually played alright at Villa. One of the few.

Someone has to make a tackle or take the ball away from the other team. We lose the ball constantly so no matter who we play its needed.

It's gonna have to be Delph and Gomes until Gbamin is fit.

We need energy.

Or, a flat three of Gomes/Schneiderlin, Delph and Davies.

We dropped a big one by selling Gueye. It wasn't hard to see.

I'm confident Gbamin will be a good addition but the injury is obviously a blow.

We had to sell Gana, so that's irrelevant.

And we don't need energy, we need better players. Gomes runs around all game and produces nothing and defends no one. Someone has to play defense in the midfield.

Absolutely devastating mate - but Gomes wasn't the only one at fault for the goals scored. But he was shocking. Then again we still could and should have scored a few to achieve a result.
Along with Gana he set himself high standards last season that he has fallen well below so far this season. But our central midfield has been far from shocking. We have conceded significantly fewer attempts on goal than any other premier team over the first 3 games (21). Only City is anywhere close with 25. Claims that our keeper has kept us in games are also wide of the mark with Pickford having made fewer saves (5) than any other premier keeper. We've also averaged over 60% possession across the 3 games. In itself not a significant stat, but together with our defensive record it belies the general view on here that our midfield is not controlling games and is being overrun. It simply isn't.

We haven't started the season particularly well when compared to how we finished last season. But things are nowhere near as bad as some people are making out. Key players haven't performed yet, but we are defending well and creating more than enough chances to see off games. Our problem, and it's a very big one that needs sorting quickly, is turning opportunities into goals.

I mean, we didn't have to. But I understand why we did.

Issue was always gonna be if we tried to play the same way without him there. It's gonna take time to get used to him not being there.
