I like Gomes, he hasn’t been at his best so far this season, and, he was poor on Friday, but, he hasn’t become a bad player over the Summer. Like most players he will have good and bad spells, it is up to him and the coaching staff to make sure his good spells by far exceed his bad ones.

He was decent against Palace, but he's just not that great a player. He was overrun a bit against Watford, but look, that's just a bad matchup as he's just not as good as Doucoure and Capoue. The Villa game he was just horrible, though. There's just no two ways about it. I still have some hope he could come to life a bit as more of an attacking player in front of what I hoped would be Gbamin and someone else, but we've got Delph and Davies for now. However, I just don't trust him as a central or defensive mid unless we are pressing a ton because he's so poor defensively. If we are stuck with playing Schneiderlin, and it looks like we are, I don't want Gomes in there unless we play him higher and play someone like Delph at the 8.

The problem is we always either overrate or underestimate our players. There is no happy medium. Gomes is a decent player but wouldn't get close to being a starter in a top team. He's poor defensively and doesn't score enough goals.

I said before we signed him that we needed a dominant tackler by him to make up for what he lacks and we had that before Gana went to PSG. It also helps when said tackler helps press and doesn’t sit behind the CB’s. The pairing couldn’t have been any worse last week.
