I'm really not a fan of him at all but I don't understand the criticism about last night. I mean he wasn't brilliant but he was perfectly fine, better than plenty of others.

The game sort of turned on his introduction last night. He is sort of the anti-Sigurdsson, in that there is often some style but not a lot of end substance. He carries the ball quite well and is good in possession but there's not an awful lot of end product from him. Sigurdsson isn't as involved in games, but impacts the game with goals and assists more.

You just want him and Iwobi to get the game by the neck a bit. I appreciate it's a perception but both of them seem to play within themselves most weeks. They will do the occasional thing that is good, but it's not repeated enough.

Yeah, I'm probably one of his biggest critics on here and I 'turned' a long time before most, but I thought he did OK yesterday. Obviously he could have done better with the chances, but he at least got there, and I thought he took up some decent positions and got on the ball more than he often does. He's had a few games like that over the last couple of months, where he's done pretty well as a sub for 10-20 minutes. It's not even close to being enough, clearly, but credit where it's due.

Yes I seem to remember him at Burnley doing something similar, in looking back a very similar game where it sauntered along for 75 minutes and we went for the win in the last 10.

I am probably a bit more defensive on here than most of Gomes, but I don't really see a future for him here. That being said the flow of the game changed on his arrival yesterday. I mean it could have been coincidental.

I think though, he had 3 key things to do, and didn't really do any of them well. The 2 shots and the 1 through ball he made a bit of a mess of. Granted he did things well to get to the position on each (the way he sits down the 2 Villa defenders for the shot is wonderful) and he gets awa from Mcginn brilliantly before making an "Ok" pass but one that ultimately doesn't reach it's target.

A bit of a Gomes game really. In honesty if that was his level most weeks, I'd sort of be ok with it, or more comfortable as I could see a role he would have. He would be great from the bench when the game slows. But he remains inconsistent.

He’s not poor but really surprised how much he overhits shots and passes. Needs to calm down a bit and take about 40% power off everything.

I recall when he signed and made his first few starts, many were either stating / hoping he'd be the new Arteta.

Difference is, in his pomp, Arteta would run the game against the mid to lower teams. Having said that, I wasn't convinced they were directly comparable.

However, as you point out, Gomes has all too often gone missing or just not done as much as we have seem him do when he's turned it on.

Maybe the sub role against tired legs is best. Not a bad thing to have someone who can play thst role. Doping by resting for 70 mins lol.

Needs to go , to slow gives to many stupid fouls away , and the fact tom Davies should start before him tells you all you want to know.
For the money he is on we should be able to get more value.

The injury ruined him. When he first arrived, he was genuinely exciting, but looks a shadow of it now.

Good to see a balanced view, injury has curtailed him in my view, thought at the time he came back too early after that horrendous leg break, seems to be everyone favourite scapegoat, which I can't quite get my head round.

I think most were prepared to give him some time after it, but the problem is it's been quite a while now and he's objectively terrible on the pitch.

At some point you just have to wash your hands of the problem if you can. If we can get rid, we should get rid.
