2021/22 Andre Gomes

When a player ends up on a salary far too high for what they contribute, some will happily see out their contract on the bench purely for the cash (fair enough), knowing full well the fans hate them for it.

But I think Gomes could see his contract out because the thought of playing football anywhere under pressure is really unappealing. Being a squad player on a ridiculous salary might suit his headspace perfectly.

Not even having a dig at him. He came here being open about his mental fragility, then suffered a horrific injury. Since then, he will know that he has contributed very little. Top clubs have forgotten his name by now. Would be amazed if he is one of those players that leaps to take a huge pay cut because they just really really want to start matches. I don’t even blame him. We gave him the contract.

I imagine for a decent % of what we will still pay him this season he’d gladly retire tomorrow.

Ye remember him mentioning it on commentary ,first few games I was buzzing with him ffs what's happened
Either he was flat out gash to begin with (I *think* I recall him being decent-ish on loan-?!) or he's footballer No835365 we've somehow managed to regress.

Dare I say "I wonder what Pep or Klopp could do with him" but he looks out of his depth as Sunday league never mind Prem.

Astonishing to think he could be on the books for 2 more years at towards £120k a week, barely kicking a ball - unless FL wants to get sacked playing him.

Agreed with everything you say, but he does have the best football brain in midfield at our club but he is a slug if you know what I mean

Go and watch him in the 'Pickford Derby'

He was excellent that night - and had been consistently around that period in his Everton career

I truly believe the injury completely ruined him

perhaps so; too bad he's been utter w@nk since, and we have him under contract for two more years at six mil a pop.

Nah. He'd gone badly off the boil waaayyy before the injury. This is one of those false narratives that ends up becoming 'fact' about a player. Truth is, he only looked decent because he was next to Gana - a player that could genuinely do the work of 2 players. There are very few footballers out there with Gana's work-rate and even then, how many goals and assists did Gomes contribute??

True this, i got carried away with the sexy Portuguese man from Barcelona signed for us (despite really not knowing if he was any good or not). From memory he was "ok" on loan and has been utterly garbage since he signed permanently.

Agreed. Absolutely bossed that game, was a bit unlucky not to get a goal at 0-0 if I remember correctly?

He was a gamble worth taking, but he hasn’t worked out.

Some short memories on here

He was excellent on loan - and then there was interest from Tottenham to sign him, and Evertonians were fuming at the possibility of us missing out on us signing us permanently

He's been crap ever since the injury - but to write him off as 'a crap player' is revisionism on a par with David Moyes being a bad manager for us

I want him out of the club as much as anybody - but the world (and especially the Everton World) isn't as black and white as brilliant/terrible

The warning signs were there when someone posted the following video back when we were first interested in him:

You can bet your last penny our scouts didn't watch him consistently and that we most likely signed him on the basis of who he was playing for!

I think he was always more of an idea than an actual player. This highly technical midfielder who could hold his own turning his man before pinging a great pass was what we wanted. What we got was a slow dosser who can’t dribble, assist, score or work in any kind of PL midfield.
