Remember how QPR made him look like a lamppost

He was fantastic but a) as a sub b ) with Allan and Doucoure in a three. Change either of those variables and maybe not so much with the Andre Gomes

I’d love to see him come on and become a key player, he just made a game winning contribution and it was fantastic but I want to see a lot more

The thing is, fitness is absolutely key in the Premier League. It is the fastest, most physically demanding League in the entire world.

When players get a serious injury there is 1: the time it takes for the injury to heal, 2: the time it takes them to mentally overcome it (i.e.trust their body again) and then 3: the time it takes them to regain full peak performance physical fitness.

We have suffered with probably more serious injuries in the last 5 years than any other club. Gomes was one of the worst. Our problem is that when the injury heals, we believe they are ready again. They are not. To overcome the other 2 factors can be quick or slow depending on the player himself. Even those players who haven't had a serious injury, but lots of little niggles like Delph and Mina clearly struggle to trust their own body in the same way, which impacts their ability to regain full peak performance physical fitness.

But let's be clear, Gomes, Digne, Delph, Coleman, Gbamin are all top footballers from an ability point of view. They can all play the game. They wouldn't be in the Premier League otherwise. So let's not keep questioning their ability as we have all seen it at some stage (Gbamin pending). Being not in peak condition physically and mentally is the most likely cause of inconsistency.

So can they deal with the psychological injury scars that prevent them getting to absolute peak physical condition again? That is the question....

Over to the sports psychologists and the physical fitness coaches.

(Oh and we also have a duty as fans to help these players and encourage them as much possible. Look at our impact Monday night... )

He was the same player before the injury as he was after and he was never ever consistently good enough over ninety minutes.
Yes he was very good last week for the time he was on the field and I think he could be worthwhile staying in the team but not for the full game, he just can‘t do it, same as Delph, they are okay for sixty minutes or so but never for the full game.

What has changed now is we do have wide players either side that opposition really have to worry about. When Gomes came on against Gunners we looked even more balanced and confident.

Never happen, he’s not suited to this league and not good enough to carry. As you can only get away with him in a 3 man midfield, if he’s playing. Now if he was getting 20 assists and he was dominating games, fair enough. But he doesn’t

But he was poor before his injury. And had like 1 goal and 1 assist.

Do people realise he had a fractured ankle when he first joined us? He then broke the same ankle vs Spurs. His first season we all agree he did well. We finished 8th and we were happy at the end of that season to turn his loan into a permanent.

The next season we won 2, drew one and lost one if the first 4 games before he bruised his ribs and was basically out for next 4 games. 3 of those were then losses to Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheff utd. The other was also a loss to Man City. 4 defeats in a row.

His frst game back we beat West Ham, then lost that stupid VAR game away at Brighton before the Ankle break at Spurs where he was arguably our best player.

So a real bad game in against Villa at the start of that season and some ok games means he was bad before the injury? If he was, it didn't impact the team. It certainly did when he didn't play....

Can he last for ninety minutes though? I doubt it. He has scored one goal and not many assists since he has been here and the only time he was involved in the game for ninety minutes was the Derby game at Anfield, Pickford’s cock up, when for me he ran the game and was MOTM for me, and even then he managed to miss a sitter with the header in the Kop end.
