Agreed. When Gomes first came over here on loan he was the best midfielder I’d ever seen at the club. I loved Fellaini and Arteta but I’d never seen someone run the game like he did.

I’d love to see him get back to his best.
What's most frustrating is how seldom he is able to find such a level, even pre-injury at the end of his first season, I felt he flattered to deceive on too many occasions (despite immensely enjoying him dictate play from deep when he was really on it) and so couldn't really compare him to players who were more consistent in their application whilst in a blue shirt.

In spite of all that though I do love him, and just one decent performance is enough for me to start believing that a strong run of form is just around the corner, which will hopefully coincide with the Toffees picking up points and moving up the table

I just want to make everybody aware that @Zatara wanted to pay his contract up the other day.
Lol, even Zat gets it wrong occasionally mate.
Having said that…many of us were probably thinking the whole squad should be ditched after the soulless performances of recent months.
Still, a young positive manager who knows how to be a midfielder and actually control the game whilst playing attacking football, is what we needed. A breath of fresh air, and a lifeline for many of the players.
Yes, there will be some tough times ahead, but if we approach games with yesterday’s attitude things should be ok.

He's never ever been anywhere near the levels of Arteta, Pienaar or Fellaini. For the most part he's not even been on par with Darron Gibson.

I think during the 'Pickford' derby he looked world class and ran the show that day, Darron Gibson could not do those things. He is a confidence player though and we haven't had the number of games where he might be less than what he was that night but still gives a 7/10 performance, especially since his injury. Up to him now, his position will be gone to DVB if he doesn't pull his finger out consistently.

Obviously clips, but he looks to have been given the responsibility by Lampard to ensure the show. Stay central most of time and dictate play. Maybe the 3-5-2 helps, but he always seemed to end up dripping wide to cover Digne bombing forward under other managers, or had no runners / movement in the middle to play off.

One game though, hopefully we see the best of him going forward. Fingers crossed.

It’s no secret that the way we’ve been set up for the past 6 months made our midfield pretty much redundant. (longer if you include the back end of Ancelotti’s reign)

It’s why Doucoure has looked our only serviceable midfield player, because he’s got the legs to cover the pitch and make a nuisance of himself.

Gomes and Allan looked rejuvenated in the new system and both looked to be enjoying their football more than I’ve seen for ages. Long may it continue.

Do you know what, I wouldn't even put him in the top 20 that I've seen here. He is undoubtedly good, if he is given space. That's why he looked so good on his loan spell. Once teams sussed him in his second season they just pressurised him and it cut his effectiveness by 50%. He's a decent squad filler, but, he's on too much money to be a squad filler here.

Comes across a wee bit of a 'Butch' Wilkins (aka 'The Crab') but he does make himself available and doesn't seem as frightened of receiving the ball - as was the same for every one of our players on the pitch - so maybe the shackles are off and we can begin to see the Gomez Mk.1 hat Barca thought they had bought. Reckon he could become our next Sheeds (if only)

s the majority of our players were. The movement off the ball by others
