Andy Gray - Everton legend?

Boy, that is some chip you have on your shoulder, fella.

Re Andy Gray, he is a club legend but he is not an Evertonian in the sense that I am.....lifelong, born, bred and buttered.

He played for my club for a couple of years and created one heck of a splash.

I should imagine he is a Villa fan more than a fan of Everton, Wolves or any other club he played for.

He was a professional footballer turned professional broadcaster.....and as such his brief was no doubt to pander to the pro English bias that Sky, his erstwhile employers, display toward our clubs in Europe.

So no.....it wouldn't surprise me nor would it annoy me if he got excited about a Liverpool goal in a European game and I have too much going on in my life to sit "fuming" about it all these years later, even iif the event had registered with me at the time it happened.

Unlike your good self, my distaste for the RS precludes me watching them on TV as I often feel nauseous in the extreme even reading sommat about them ergo I was in complete and blissful ignorance of this heinous crime committed by the man who battered Bayern Munich into submission all those years ago.

That night defines Andy Gray's status among sensible Evertonians.....not some imagined "fist pumping" on your behalf when Gerrard scored a goal.

If you stopped "fuming" for a few minutes you might like to watch one of the Youtube links several of our friends were kind enough to post of Andy's reaction to the Jags goal.

There us no doubt where Andy's loyalties lay when that rocket went in :celebrate:

Hope this helps ;)
You mean those the links above from Layne?

Erm?! But mate ... you do realize...

I respect your opinion on Gray, fair enough. Each person has differing opinions and thats why we log on each day. I've already said it in the thread; we use the term legend far too much for my liking. Gray was a good striker and I loved his contribution and his efforts to my team.

It's Paul Rideout with a blonde mop of hair in ball strangling shorts. Good player, not a legend for me.

Yeah but none of us do commentary for football matches shown live on sky, he cant exactly shout ****off you stuffy **** besides its best having the sound turned down low when they are playing so you don't have to hear the moronic songs they come out with.
You're right he cant. Fair do's mate.

Equally I didn't expect him to kin celebrate a RS winner in injury time either like he did, sitting next to kopite Tyler. Not even sure it was Tyler actually but I do know Gray was co-commentating and drowned out the primary commentator with his antics.

My dad's "legends" were Dixie and Warney Cresswell, "The Prince of Right Backs". He watched them as a teenager (though that word probably wasn't around) and nothing would shake his belief in either of them.

Isn't that what most of us do? We watch the guys at a certain age and attach a particular affection to one or two of them.

Dad was lucky to have watched the great men and I was lucky enough to see Bally week in, week out. People who started watching the team through the 70's and early 80's have their own favourites. If a fifteen year old Joe Bloggs wanted to give the word "legend" to Andy Gray, who am I to contradict him? He will always see Andy in a particular light.

I bet it was amazing to see Dixie week in week out

Although I liked him as a player, I'm not so sure I'd class Andy Gray an Everton legend to be honest. He did score some important goals, and was a big influence on the team... Damn it! The man's a legend!

Gone off him a bit now though, due to his prattish behaviour.

done enough for me, he's a ledge
I'd agree.

Shone very brightly for a short time.

You can hear his affection for us when he speaks about us still.

Striker

49 league games
14 league goals.

If Gray is a legend then Jelavic must also be!
I see your point but I don't agree.

Gray was in a top side that won stuff, Jelavic was with us when we were a "ace but didn't make Europe" side.

I'd say it's harder to be a success in the former.

Seeing as there's a bit of disagreement on here about Andy Gray's status at the club, can we at least agree on him being a fantastic player that was instrumental in a tremendously successful side?

I personally loved him; he was the catalyst for our success and was a big fans favourite, which shows how high he was regarded by the fans in a team that were full of great players and characters.

As has been pointed out by others, he was never a prolific striker, but I'm not judging him by his goals anyway as he offered us much more than that.

Football is all about opinions, isn't it, so the terms 'club legend', 'club great' or 'club icon' are all subjective to the individual who perceives a player to be that. I've got no problem whatsoever with other people's opinions, as it's merely a good starting point for discussion or debate.

If someone thinks Brett Angell is an Everton legend, who am I to say he's not? ......by the way, he's definitely not, like ;)

The passion of the man was infectious throughout the team. Look at the way he celebrated each and every goal he scored, pure joy. I loved it when he played for us. Put his head in where it hurt and was a nightmare for defenders.

I would say Lyons is more of an icon from the 70s perhaps, just like Tony Hibbert has been over recent years :)
Totally agree with you on that was my main point on which player is entitled to legend status!
I suppose it's just a word, but a great player in which Andy Gray was is no where near the status of that word legend imo - it has to be on service to the club , and their fantastic long term records imo- I don't disagree with mentioning Andy Gray as a great no 9!who led us to glory in a very good team, just like many stars in that team- Kevin Sheedy for instance what a great player he was, and he is still working for us!
