I'll admit that I didn't watch the game so have no idea how he played, but just think that anyone new to the team at the moment is hard to really judge, if for no other reason than the lack of crowd presence creating a somewhat surreal environment that's more akin to a pre-season friendly than a competitive fixture.
I totally agree Bruce, but my point was that there'll be the inevitable stereotyping that comes from swathes of our fan base - look at Davies like many others.

Admittedly, I thought that he was underwhelming yesterday but considering all the circumstances like you and others mentioned it'd be idiotic to judge him on this.

There's a few experienced first team players who are deserving of judgement before we get to the Commissioner; only time will tell to see how his career pans out.

Playing probably the best team in Europe at the moment, on the back of a lengthy break from competitive action, in a team he's largely unfamiliar with. Hardly seems the ideal grounds to judge him either way.
You’ve deffo got to play him for a few games before him being judged.

he had a couple of neat touches and was involved in our best move of the game.

He was off the pace though and I wonder whether he needs to develop physically before he can make a true impact. He did a lot of running off the ball but never seemed to get close enough to make a tackle.

Basically he’s going to need games and time

If we signed a senior pro in January, and he'd not played a game until yesterday, I dare say people would expect him to be off the boil for a bit, due to the prolonged break, the weird environment games are played out in, the new team mates he's getting used to. Throw in the high quality of the opposition and the lad being completely new to senior football, and it just seems a bit nuts to make any kind of judgements until the end of the season at the very earliest.

Exactly. Even then would be too soon.

Players take time to develop.

Holgate has taken 4 years to look like a decent PL central defender.

Carlo has picked him to start a derby as he works with him every week and thinks he is good enough to play for Everton.

It's is worth noting too. The same with Calvert Lewin too. It's worth noting progress is not a linear process either. People go forward, and back a bit to hopefully move forward.

An odd game for him really, he’s an instinctive player with a wee bit of magic that sets him apart from kids his age , but he was clearly asked to curb his natural instincts and play a different role to keep Trent whatisname in check, which he did. Nothing spectacular from him, is still learning which spaces to move into and when, and there’s not only his own confidence to build but those around him like Richarlison so that he receives the ball when in good positions. Tick the “1st PL start box” and let’s see how he goes from here.

My dad was very critical of him. He said he is no Barkley or Rooney-which he's not. You can see physically he's not at their level for a starting point. In many ways thats part of the problem though. You are probably comparing him to Englands best post war player, who was at or about that level the moment he stepped onto the pitch at 16 (it was akin to watching a peak Gasgoigne). You also have Ross Barkley, who while not quite at that level, was himself also head and shoulders above most 19 year olds at the time (and ultimately hasn't really improved the weaknesses in his game at all-namely decision making). I do think though, they have given us a somewhat false sense of what a young player looks like coming through.

He didn't get into the game yesterday, however he was no worse than Iwobi. I know that soiunds an odd comparison to make, as Iwobi was poor, but Iwobi is a 30m footballer. The truth us they were given a very difficult job to do. They had to constantly be aware of tucking in without the ball, and at times with the ball. This is counter intuitive for wider players, particularly one like Gordon who's strengths are carrying the ball and getting further up the pitch.

Unlike Iwobi, who had Gomes and Milner to deal with, Gordon had one of the best in the business in an attacking sense to try and neutralise on that side in Arnold. And you know what. I think he did ok. In open play, Arnold didn't do a great deal and in truth probably less when Sigurdsson came on.

There were a couple of moments, where he got the ball, dropped a should and carried it, which you can see is his strength and he put one nice ball through. The issue was, really he only had a couple of opportunities to show that, and you' hope in other games which will be easier there will be more opportunities. There was one where he took a couple of Liverpool players out of the game but then needed to get his pass away. He didn't and then lost possession. That's the key difference stepping up from the 23's, or even training. You hold it one touch too many and it you lose the ball.

I saw Don Hutchinson talk about Ross Barkley and he said the first pass you see, make it. I think it's a good mantra for midfield players. Don't try and beat too many players, if you see a pass, play the pass.

In all honesty I thought it was an odd game to start him. I felt Bernard would have probably suited the role better, and unleashing Gordon for the last 20 minutes as the game opened up may have been better. You think of the joy we were getting and it may have really suited him. It's a big vote of confidence in him though, that he started over Sigurdsson and Bernard and shows he's well thought of. He's likely to get more opportunities and hopefully can show a little something in those games going the other way.

He will have learned an awful lot from the game too, going up against Arnold. I'd also say, Arnold didn't have much involvement from open play, so from Ancelotti's perspective he probably did as he asked him to do.

If anything we have to use these games to let him get used to first team competitive football. Bobby Martinez was right in that there is a huge gap between u23s and first team with scant opportunities for most players. By circumstances he has that opportunity.

I.e. don't expect wonders.

Showed flashes of forward play. Good control but got caught a number of times but again, this is against one of the best pressing teams.

Was very disciplined throughout and I am sure Carlo is happy.
