2020/21 Anthony Gordon

Honestly a bit surpised at how annoyed people are getting about him not being in the squad. Richy is out Tosun is our 3rd choice striker so he's obviously on the bench. Gordon competes with other wingers but has he shown anything in the PL games he's played to warrant a place in the team? I don't think so. I don't think Bernard, Iwobi or Gylfi have done great either but it's important to have a bit of perspective that these are all expirienced internationals, Gordon is 19. At very worst we can put Bernard in the shop window for the next 2 months and Gordon gets in the squad after training more with the first team, alternatively he goes out on loan and comes back with some game time under his belt.

Can we please not have another Tom Davies situation on our hands where a player who's proved nothing aside from a half in a game or anything like that is getting people on the manager's back? I can't see how anyone can say Gordon is someone who should be playing for us every week or in the squad. He's a prospect let him learn and adapt to Carlo's style and we can see how he plays, Iwobi and Bernard are better options than him for Carlo, especially now that we've been in a poor patch of form.

The last thing Carlo or Gordon needs is throwing him into games we need to be winning and his faults being shown and he being dragged off or anything like that. Davies was killed from over exposure, people always clamoured for Dowell and Barkley is still seen as some amazing player, we have a terrible habit of overhyping youngsters, let him be a new Osman or something, someone unspectacular that can do a job, they're not all world beaters just let them learn and grow.

Absolutely massive post full of complete nonsense there

How is he supposed to get a game when he wont follow the tactics.
I watched his assist in the under 23s, what did he think he was doing running fast with the ball?
He should have run to the half way line, turned around and passed it back to the keeper, maybe then he would get a game.
Attacking before the opposition has got all their players back is just plain rude and won't be tolerated at this club.

Gordon has pace, is direct, has bags of enthusiasm and plays with no fear. Pretty much all the attributes our midfield lacks. Unfortunately we have a manager with outdated methods that prefers older experienced players. Loan out Kean and keep Tosun says it all.

If Gordon was 29 and had all the drive and enthusiasm coached out of him he would play every week.

What a tremendously suspicious post...

The fact you thought Ancelotti had a choice of keeping an injured Tosun is also 'interesting'.

Well done.

Don't be put off by snide remarks lad, say what you see. I also think Gordon is our best midfielder.

Why isn’t he playing premier league games?

Because he hasn’t shown anything in premier league games

Why hasn’t he shown anything in premier league games?

Because he hasn’t played enough premier league games.

Why isn’t he playing premier league games?...

etc etc... It’s circular reasoning that excludes anyone from the team who isn’t already playing in the first 11... hate it. It’s why we’re stuck with Siggurdson and deserve him.
This argument gets rolled out every time there's a young player that people want to play, and every time it's wrong. We're not picking the team, the manager is. The manager has not, at any point, said that he's not picking him because he hasn't done anything in premier league games. In fact, he said that in order to get games he has to show every day in training that he should be picked. Now whether it's true or not, we have no option but to believe that he isn't doing that really.

Without even going back very far at all i can recall lots of people clamouring for Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny to start because it was so obvious they were top class players in the making. Now the same people kick off when they're in the matchday squad. I'm not saying Gordon won't make it here, but I just don't get what it is that has people so wound about him at the moment. He's not competing for a place with Sigurdsson in the main so using him as the comparison is pointless. On saturday he was left out in favour of Bernard, who had a pretty good game and scored, and Iwobi, who came on and did well, creating a couple of good opportunities. It's hard to say it was the wrong call really.

There is a certain pattern we fall into with young players.I am not trying to get at anyone else with this either, because truthfully I am probably worse than anyone else for it. It's a big part of our identity to bring young players through and in lieu of being successful it has been something we can be proud about.

However we essentially overrate younger players, get frustrated when they don't get the game time, (which can then lead to further eulogising of said player) and then often when they don't hit the heights they've been built up to we are then probably too critical. A lot of the ire directed to Tom Davies, is in no small part because people almost feel betrayed he is not single handedly dragging us to success.

I also think for whatever reason, possibly because of Carragher/Gerrard we don't appreciate the young players we have had. Osman and Hibbert did a really good job for us. They were good solid players, but it's never quite enough.

Anyway to Gordon, I really like him. I think he's the best prospect we have had since Barkley (Barkley had more wow factor to me though) but Gordon seems like he bhas his game more together than him so he may not hit a brick wall. I can see an argument as to why Gordon should play, but I am really not going to fall out of love with Ancelotti over it. We will not attract a manager as good and as consistent as Ancelotti going forward. He's more important to me than any indvidual player.

There is something of a crude myth that minutes alone is all a player needs. Yes he needs game time, but also in the right context. Endless games, as we have seen with Tom Davies, especially when you're not playing well probably harms a player.

Yep, couldn’t agree more with that. It’s obviously most noticeable - and probably most detrimental - with young players, but it happens with other players too. People convince themselves that Doucouré is going to transform the worst midfield in the league into the best, and are then baffled when he turns out to be the same distinctly average player he always has been. It’s like nobody can ever just be alright, everyone has to be amazing or awful.

I am torn in this lad.

I have not seen enough of this lad to form an opinion on him

But the situation is strange. I know fans tend to overrate young prospects and I trust Carlo

But we were so depleted the past few weeks. Couldn't have hurt to give him a chance.

There is no problem with a Doucoure type if you aren't putting significant money into him. No team at our level is going to compete without developing players which is why for some of us it is frustrating to see mistakes of the past manifest again in the development of Gordon

Not really sure on your point there? We did put significant money into Doucoure, are you saying that makes him a problem? We need to develop players, hopefully Gordon will be one of them, agreed. I don't really know what else to say to that.

Doucoure is a separate point but what I'm saying is spending a lot on a fine player isn't actually fine.
