Bit embarrassing to not be fit 4 months into the season. I understand his match fitness wouldn't be there as he's not playing but he should be fit as fiddle with natural fitness.

I respect his honesty though. It will be a wake up call to him just how far behind he is both physically and tactically and for him to be upfront about it shows good maturity.

Oh yeh I wasn't getting at his honesty but he trains with the first team every day. How did he/coaching staff not realise how unfit he was? Do we just do rondos and penalty practice in training or something?

Fitness across the whole squad has been an issue all season and he still goes back to persistent comments made against Ancelotti's "easy" training sessions at past clubs.

It's definitely concerning. I suppose it's possible that he wasn't 'unfit' as such, and maybe just got caught out by the pace of the game or his own poor decision making of when to run etc which led to him tiring faster than he should have done, but on the face of it it's not great.

I said this on here.

Was so glaringly obvious.

  • “Where I need to improve is getting back into shape quicker and being harder to beat, instead of pressing, then waiting and not getting back into shape – being the odd one out.”
Also;

“I was tired really early in the game,” said Gordon.

“Playing a Championship team, which was quite defensive minded, I felt I could have really got at them, but my fitness levels just weren’t there.

Now... all those on Ancelotti's back for not playing him might start to see the manager knows what he's doing.

yeh but he still plays the senior pros who dont put the defensive work in

Yeah I remember one of their attacks in the first half, that Olesunde fella was one on one with Digne in the box and about to go past him, and Gordon was stood about 10 yards away with his hands on his hips.

The thing is, he had his own personal trainer for 3 months during lockdown so was well ripped.

It goes to show you can't replicate proper football though either physically, mentally or tactically.

It really really has. We have players who could running full pace the entire match running half pace and you see they are knackered (Richarlison). Could be down to attitude wiht him but almost all of our players just look like they are spent about 45-60minutes in to almost every match. Has looked a bit better lately but still, we're halfway in to a season.

barely playing any games all season will be the reason for his lack of 'fitness'.
baffles me why players like him stuck in no mans land aren't made to play regular games for the u23s or ask to play in the games themselves.

Yeh I know this season we don't train very often due to the schedule and COVID which is an issue but it certainly marries up with previous criticisms of Ancelotti's teams.

Not obvious at all. Please show when you said that in this thread? And maybe he'd have more match fitness if he played more, you know, matches....

Exactly. But apparently it's all Gordon's fault and Carlo Magnifico is Perfecto.
Yeh it could be more down to match fitness than anything.

The thing is, he had his own personal trainer for 3 months during lockdown so was well ripped.

Exactly. People don't seem to understand that fitness != match fitness. Ask Mo Farah to play a game, he'll be heaving after 5 minutes. You only truly develop the fitness required to play games by playing games, and every sport and discipline is different, and requires a different 'type' of fitness. 5-a-side is different from 11-a-side. Football is different from basketball. It's not as easy as go and run a bunch of 10ks, then go and do 10k on a saturday afternoon. Some people can't seem to get their heads around this.

Yeah, but Carlo Perfecto tho, so it must be Gordon's fault   :coffee:
