If he plays tomorrow then he needs to be staying (bar a ludicrous offer - like £70m). It's far too late now to be selling important first team players.

I'm annoyed we've let this drag a week and are still talking. Like what is there to talk about? Tell Chelsea our number, tell them the deadline is this weekend, and tell them not to contact us unless they are making the bid.
That's not how a negotiation like this one works. You very much want to keep the lines of communication open and keep the other side invested. Crazy as it probably sounds, the best way to extract a maximum overpay is leveraging the sunk cost fallacy. The more you get them talking and keep them talking, the more you can build up internal momentum to conclude a deal at their end. Then it's just about maneuvering the terms to where you want them.

It's similar to mobilization for war - once you get to a certain point on both sides, the war becomes almost inevitable.

Yes that's fine if it was just about money, but we need time to replace him as well. Selling at tea time on deadline day would have the potential to very easily sink our season. It might get the most possible cash, but we would have about 3 hours to spend it and I can only imagine the panic that would cause.

Personally I think there's deals in principle already agreed and they are contingent on the Gordon move.

It's a high risk game alright.

If he plays tomorrow it will show just how far any deal is from being concluded. If they were close then the club (and the player) wouldn't do anything to jeopardise the move, which could easily happen if he picks up a nasty injury.

For what it’s worth I’d give him to the end of the season, see how he goes if he looks like getting the right results great, but none of this getting rid mid season crap. come May next year we will all be able to make a informed decision as to whether Frank is the manager for us. But for my money the jury is still out.

Erm, that's exactly what we have done Tim. We've said publicly we want him to stay. We're also widely reported to value him at a minimum of £50m. In a world where the player hilds all the cards, what more do you expect them to do exactly?

The thing is, he hasnt got to be much better if he stays. Hes probably our best all round attacker already, and will likely get better still.

If people at the top of the club want to make decisions on him, that's on them. It has nothing to do with the player, who's job it is to keep improving incrementally.
He has to be better, your top attacker can't be producing what he has and that not be a problem

That's not really fair on him though. Chelsea bidding £45m for him doesn't mean we should expect him to suddenly score 15 goals.

But he does need to be much, much better with his end product. We also need to not be so reliant on him, and start playing him in his best position and not with Gray, because playing them together gets the best out of neither. That's on Lampard.
If you're turning down 45m bids the player has to be worth it

Guarantee he'll not be in the squad because "His head isn't where it needs to be following the media stories"

Hmmm Lampard has very carefully avoided saying ‘he’s not for sale’ and has described him as an ‘asset’

Say your goodbyes folks
He said, twice, that he - 'I' - considers him an asset to the squad.

Reading between the lines... suggests to me that the club are open to selling him and he's just wanting to make it clear that he'd rather keep him.
