2022/23 Anthony Gordon

That's pretty much my position.

I see him as a higher talent and certainly not the worst winger in the league (christ hes not even the worst winger at our club) but there comes a price where you need to sell. We are almost at that point.

Inevitably there will be animosity towards Gordon, but really he is a success story and should spur on future actions.

To prospective academy signings, you can go from Preston reserves to Chelsea on a huge salary in 15 months. To existing academy players- look what can be achieved. For the club, we probably sacrificed a handful of games, then 1/3 of a season where he had low/minimal output, got 1/2 a season of reasonable output and are getting paid 50m in the process. It makes a tonne more sense than continual short term fixes of say James/Sigurdsson etc.
Massive success story. I've said before we'll know when we're good enough and the players are good enough to fight off offers like this. To quote Bill Rawls, "You'll be so damn certain you won't even have to ask the question."

He's gone, just waiting for Chelsea to match what we want from him, would've been very easy for Frank to come out and say "he's our player and he'll be our player" similar to how Martinez handled Chelsea's interest in Stones back in the day. Always a shame to lose a young player from the academy but quite frankly the numbers being thrown around are far too good to be rejecting, that's the fact of the matter. As for the "business" vs "football" decisions, this is one that will surely benefit both greatly. Allows us far more room to operate in the window and bring in a higher quality of player. Gordon may grow to be a very good player but he'll never be as valuable to us and the club as he is in this moment with what selling him can provide us with.

I think Gordon is a really good sweet spot for us.

Played between 50-100 games, had a "hot spell" of 20 or so, still only 21 so big upside. If I were being critical, there was some wastage under Carlo and a bit Silva (though you could say he was still growing) but in the whole very good. If we could have arrived at this point a year earlier, we would likely have got even more.

That's the thing, post 20 every year you dont keep improving it's an anchor on the price.

I also think, with a couple of exceptions (mainly DCL) we dont develop players well from 20-24. I'm always glad to take the gamble on almost outsourcing that aspect of it to a top team, with an elite culture.

This will sound mad, but Dobbin and Whittaker are just as impressive as Gordon was at a similar age. So we have to get into the habit of just getting lads off the conveyor belt.

Onyango is another, not a wonderful football, but at 6 ft 5 someone who has potential to be of interest to top teams.

To be fair to Lampard I think he’s a man of integrity and doesn’t want to say things that may not come true. Right now we aren’t going to sell Onana because we just bought him and have high hopes for him but if PSG suddenly went mental and offered £120m he would be sold.
We might not want to sell Gordon, but there’ll be a price point we accept just like Wolves didn’t necessarily want to sell MGW but they got offered like double his value.

The difference here is that unlike Lampard, Martinez showed many, many times that he was full of crap.

Y'know what I hope you're right, in fairness he was very forthright about the interest in Dele too which he didn't need to be so I definitely think you're onto something. I think that there's definitely been a number around that £50m mark that Chelsea will match, it'll just be for us trying to get as much up front as possible or else off setting it with some players coming from Chelsea.

Interesting

About as much as you'll ever get from a manager in that article. Lampard isn't going to be the one making the call on a sale, is my reading of the situation based on those comments

No surprise, but besiktas are clearly not imminently signing Alli because it says he's also in the squad. If ever I thought a rumour made no sense, its this one.

Good read that, really good from Lampard.

For me he is the current Mr Everton. I get he isn't the finished article and there are bits of his game he needs to improve, but i feel he's the heart of the players.

It's not just what he others on the pitch, it's hope for the future, for something better.

I think I might crawl under a rock until Sep 1st. If he goes it will probably be the most gutted I've been since Dunc went to Newcastle.
And don't forget 'speed' that had to be the most painfully demoralising year of losses ever...

absolutely shocking decisions on our part...

I don't think we will ever be offered £45 - £50m again for Gordon, I don't mind Chelsea making it up with players, but please don't accept anything less than Broja and Conor Gallagher in exchange.
Gilmour and Batshuayi won't improve us

getting £50m off Chelsea for Gordon is like making love to a beautiful woman
