Exactly this. We absolutely love to reward mediocrity. Look at last season Gordon gets 2 goals that he knows about in a whole season, the worst season in most a lot of fan’s lifetimes and recent memory and ends up as our Young Player of the Year and Player of the Year. Have an absolute ridiculous offer then from Chelsea in the summer from a man who doesn’t understand football and we’re too stupid to sell him, despite the fact we’re absolutely broke. I don’t care it was £60m outright or £40m + addons, Gordon has shown absolutely nothing that he’ll ever be near half of those valuations but we turn it down because the manager loves him for some reason.
Then you’ve got Iwobi, a player who has had literally a single maybe 6 week spell of good form and a couple months spell of doing the absolutely bare minimum of running around over his 3.5 years at Everton where he’s largely been utter crap. Now he’s set to get a fat new contract, same with Gordon, at the same time we’re struggling to tie down Pickford who outside of rare moments has been great for us in the entirety of his spell.
If Iwobi and Gordon were so good that they deserved new contracts wouldn’t you think teams would be banging down our door now trying to get them on the cheap? There’s constant reports of Spurs, Chelsea and United all looking at Pickford, because he’s a very good player and would play for those sides, there’s not a single of the 17 teams above us in the Premier League even looking at enquiring about Iwobi and Gordon but yet here we are straight to give them new deals on massive money.
It’s an absolute joke.
