Antolin Alcaraz

Begs the question how much longer Distin can keep going? I appreciate that there are doubts over the legitimacy, but Chris Horner won the Tour of Spain recently as a 41 year old, and Distin shows no signs of slowing up. The man is an impressive physical specimen.

By season end;
Distin -- 36 (contract expired)
Jagielka -- 31 (3 years on contract)
Alcaraz -- 31 (1 year on contract)
Heitinga --30 (contract expired)
Duffy -22
Stones --19 (4 years on contract)

I imagine we will see all the above for 2 more seasons with the exception of Heitinga and maybe Duffy. By then though we would need 2 more centre backs....

Which furthers the point that Alcaraz isn't a bad signing.

And we can't forget that Distin will be 36 at the end of this year, so I can't see much wrong with getting Alcaraz in but his injuries are a problem.

I can see us shipping out Heitinga if possible in January to get some money back and to buy another CB, Duffy doesn't seem to be in any of Martinez's plans, so it would be best if he went to a club where he would get game time.

A few more seasons, but I can understand why we are giving him 1 year contracts.

The body could deteriorate anytime really at his age, but he looks after himself so well, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's still playing football when he's 40, but probably not for us by then.

How old was Maldini? Cannavaro? As you say, theres no signs of anything at the moment, hes still a superb player.

Can't say I watched Milan all that regularly, and not wishing to place Distin in such illustrious company, but Maldini retired as a 40 year old having still made 32 appearances in his final season. Whilst Distin isn't as elegant a player as Maldini, you'd probably say he's a more impressive athlete. Who knows.

Yeah, the body is a fickle machine though.

Like Goat said there are no signs of him slowing down but he could lose some of that pace which sets him apart from most CB's.

I reckon Distin will be playing professional football longer than Alcaraz.

I'd like us to see us go for another young player like Stones, but a left footer....2 years then to break into the side.

This in bold.....Martinez seems to be a clever chap who knows his footie....why sign Kone? Age,wages, fee, 3 year contract....

Doesn't make any sense to me at all....

Because Martinez wasn't to know he'd get Lukaku an hour before the transfer window closed. Pretend that never happened and the signing of Kone makes far more sense. When Lukaku gets injured, etc. we'll need Kone. People keep forgetting it's all about squads these days and we never had one under Moyes. Martinez has created one after just 1 transfer window and deserves huge credit for that; for the first time in years we have bodies and options in every every area of the pitch

None of the above explains why we spunked all that cash on someone not fit for purpose.
