He's tremendously highly rated by the Wigan fans. They really do see him as their star man, more important than Kone, the three Mcs, Maloney, anyone. He was their rock at the back. Wigan have had a habit of giving short-term contracts since Martinez came in: there has been a year-on-year ambition to steer the club towards solvency.
