Antonee Robinson

Your missing the point though. We have supposedly a future LB but unless he shows something special in training, he cant be backup.

So what do you do? Spend a chunk on a different player, like I said above, Jamaal Lewis for instance. Or do you loan a player? That still involves a fee and wages. Or do you get an experienced Championship player in who is similar to Baines and Digne in that hes good going forward (has more pace though), he knows the club, is only backup and if we did want to sell after a year would make a £5-6mill profit.
In an ideal world, like I say Digne would have someone who is pushing him for a starting place but obviously currently with all that's going on we're probably not in a position to do that, accepted. However I'm not sure I rate the Robinson that highly and it smacks of the easy option, which is not the preferred option.

Yes, he was a kid who needed and wanted game time. There are not many better than Digne around, an untried kid is not taking his position if a seasoned international couldn't do it.

Competition has got nothing to do with under performance. Digne had strong competition the past few seasons in Baines. Players play crap because they are crap generally.

Robinson has a ton of potential, what you are suggesting would cost us about 20M for a player who wont even be playing. That would be utter madness.

There is a different manager in charge now too.
Going back for released players is really going to push us forward isn't it. If you don't think healthy competition for places improves players then what can i say, we'll have to agree to disagree but your wrong.

Imagine debating this hard over robinson, dear me. Thought we were trying to move up a level.

Good players are good players, their past is irrelevant.

I think the competition thing is an utter myth, no footballer chooses to play badly on purpose. Having options is healthy of course.

Getting a back up left back is not "moving up a level" You are overthinking this far too much.

Exactly, in an ideal world. We have so many problem areas at the moment that we need to spend money in. LB isnt one of them. Yes Digne may get injured but thats a chance every club takes with their best players. Unlike Chelsea/City etc we cant have £30mill backups. I dont rate him that highly but he's a good young player with lots of experience and still room to improve. Ive seen him about 4-5 times since he left and he played very well, he was excellent when we played Wigan last pre season. Full of energy and goid on the ball, has excellent recovery pace too

If there was a top young prospect identified cheap or on a free then fine, but as it stands Robinson is probably the best we could get when you take fees/wages into account. As we need something inbetween Digne and Nkounkou.

I would even take him back with the intention of selling him on as its a quick profit - it makes good business sense too.

I personally do think healthy competition effects players, they train harder knowing someone is chomping at the bit to take their place. I am thinking longer term getting proper competition in because obviously we have more pressing issues now. I ask you this then, if Digne gets injured are you happy Robinson would be a starter, if yes then fair enough you rate him better than me and that's fine, opinions and all.

Fair enough, appreciate you taking the time to explain your reasoning.

I have no idea to be honest, I know next to nothing about Robinson and I assume neither do you unless you happen to go to a lot of Wigan games? (possible I suppose..) The minimal times I have seen him, highlights and the likes, he looks good going forward and has decent pace but I would have to trust the people in charge on that.

I mean he is an international player, that doesn't always mean you are a good player but its not like he is some jabroni coming in from nowhere. He has something about him.

No I don't know much about him since he left either

I get the logic in bringing him back on the cheap; he did seem to be the one of our young, loaned out players that got good reviews regularly.

We’ve already brought in young cover at LB though and we have Delph who can play the position as well. Even if it’s “only” a couple of million quid, that could pay a loan fee for a CM/RW/ST who could really help the team this year.

Got told by a mate who’s a Wigan fan that it’s because he’s got a relegation clause which is why he’s going for 2mil. Wouldn’t be a bad shout, would essentially mean we just loaned him out for a year, didn’t cost us any money. Definitely worth it as a backup, saw him play for Wigan a few times last season in person, and he’s by far and away their best player.

watched him a fair amount with USA national side a couple of years ago. Very good going forward, lots of pace, good delivery into the box - but poor positional awareness and not as good as a defender, which ultimately is what a fullback is.

Reminiscent of Sidibe in that sense.

Was absolutely abused by Brazil in a game a couple of years ago. Granted, Brazil, but they picked on Robinson, everything down his side, and it was a baby seal clubbing, he was the worst player on the pitch.

American press has been that he's improved at Wigan. I like his character, he's got his head screwed on straight, I have every reason to think that he's improved. Certainly Milan wouldn't have acquired him if he were awful. We could do much worse as a backup. For 2M I don't think twice, I grab him.
