Apologise to Southgate

Robson barely played. Pearce was a yard dog. Typical player that English fans love. Adams was pretty average at international level. Barnes was world class player but never did it for England.
Robson over 500 club games and abt 90 caps for England but barely played, ok mate🤷‍♂️.

There is no case for Rice. Foden and Saka yea maybe
So a player who was central to Arsenal's good season wouldn't be considered over a player who could barely get in the PSG team and was largely disliked by the Spanish supporters at the start of the tournament? It's the same for Lamal. He got 7 goals in 50 appearances for Barca this season. Nico Williams 8 in 37 for Bilbao. They all had really good tournaments, but that's the point people are making isn't it? Southgate turned people who play amazingly for their clubs and turned them into plodders for England.

Well, in a combined Spain-England XI re Yamal yes Saka and Foden had better club seasons so it’s fair enough to put one of them in instead. But can you definitely say they are better players than Yamal, who is obviously a phenomenon in the Rooney mould? I’m not sure but let’s have Saka or Foden in instead. For the left wing I think Williams is the best for that position. Saka never plays there and it’s not Foden’s best position. Fabian is simply a better midfield pivot at international level than Rice

I'm not sure prior to the tournament you'd have had Guardiola or Arteta willing to swap any of them tbh. I mean look at Bellingham and Kane. Both were arguably the best players in La Liga and the Bundesliga last season, yet they both had pretty mediocre tournaments. We had a lot of players who were in banging form yet they played pretty poorly. Surely the buck for that rests with the manager?

I'll say again, England are currently 5th in the FIFA rankings. If you took Spurs (5th in the league last season) and pitted them against a bunch of teams from the bottom of the table and Championship, you'd fully expect them to win most of those games. That's what Southgate has managed. What he hasn't managed is to consistently get results against the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle, Villa etc. (much less Liverpool and City). He's got a really good squad of players and has them playing like Moyes era Everton bringing his knives to a gun fight.

Hardly any england manager has done that apart from Ramsey and probably Venables.

Re Kane and Bellingham they were clearly not fully fit. My criticism of Southgate there would be that he played them so much in the first place. Especially Kane.

I think the point we can all agree on anyway is that the starting XI’s are at best very evenly matched and the original post from JJ about Spain apparently having 8-9 top players compared to our 4-5 was incorrect.
