Erm, so don't bother getting your hands in the mud in the first place?

I'm not defending the board and their crap footballing decisions. I'm just saying from a business perspective I can easily understand how they'd want to downplay it. They clearly haven't been doing their jobs properly let alone keeping a good relationship with their stakeholders.

Introducing it at all is not downplaying it one bit, pardon me.

The timing of it seems deliberate which is crap as the media have dined out on it. Anyone releasing that info would, should have known that and it’s unfair on 99.9% of fans protesting sound to be smeared as one supposedly rabid fanbase.

I’m not comfortable however with victim shaming a female over an alleged assault until more details come out. Less so turning it into memes and conspiracies.

I don't think we will hear anything more from the club or media on the matter.

Job

So you’re saying you think it being a headline piece , discussed ad nauseam amongst Evertonians and a huge story amongst the media isn’t downplaying it ?
Indeed, nor did letting this cat out of the bag against the backdrop of alleged threats to the board, them avoiding the game and fans because of a protest, and allowing the slime in the media to run wild with pieces of a story unsubstantiated thus far. Smoke and mirrors, the evidence is ring fenced.

Good times.

True mate, also true it can not have done much for morale for the manager,/ coaching staff and the team, right before one of our most important, must win matches all season.

Aye probably not as it was a leak, so in that instance I’d condemn any alleged assault and kick on with the protesting.

I’ve seen some things posted saying what “happened”, but I won’t reference it as that too could also be rubbish.

The club can clear this up. Come on Everton.

If the club had any respect for the image of our fan base (it should) they need to either:

Provide evidence of this happening by saying person x has been arrested or appealing for more information
Or
Squash this rumour and say it didn’t happen and the club is investigating the source of the allegation

By saying nothing, they’re painting everyone in a terrible light and creating more hostility and division between club and fans.

If DBB was assaulted, there’s not a person here that wouldn’t condemn that action. The way it’s been put out there on the morning of a planned peaceful protest with no evidence and no police involvement sounds like a planned PR move to discredit our fans, plain and simple and I won’t see it otherwise until there is some proof.

She's well and truly burned her bridges with the entire fanbase now. She can either come out and confirm the rumours, or come out and deny them. The lack of any evidence at all from a heavily policed stadium with hundreds of CCTV cameras is alarming to say the least.

  • ...looking at it more closely, the statement was issued at exactly 12 noon and it doesn't go into any detail on what exactly occurred:

"...malicious and unacceptably threatening correspondence received by the club and increasing incidents of anti-social behaviour — including targeted physical aggression — at recent home matches."

Just 11 minutes later, Juliette Ferrington of the BBC tweeted a photograph of the EFC statement along with: "Understand CEO Denise-Barrett Baxendale was physically manhandled by a male fan after the Brighton game." (the mention of "headlock" came later and it's hard to work out who first used that specific term)

Given that there had been ZERO written about this since it allegedly happened 11 days previously on January 3rd, and with not even the slightest rumours about it, for the further detail (DBB/manhandled/specific match) to come within such a short timeframe that information MUST have come directly from the club.

And the key question to then ask is - if this additional information was given to journalists by the club at the same time as the statement, then why wasn't DBB mentioned and the details included in the official statement?

The answer (IMHO) is because it wouldn't stand up to any scrutiny whatsoever.

I agree with other comments that there might have been an "incident" where some idiot shouted abuse at her, or maybe even jostled her (which you could potentially dress up as the "targeted physical aggression" in the statement) but there is absolutely no way that DBB was put in a headlock by a male fan, inside or anywhere near Goodison Park - and yet that is clearly what the club have told the press to report.

I know it's a conspiracy theory (and I also find it somewhat convenient that all the heightened security around Goodison last night didn't stop the players from being confronted as it "fits their narrative" but I won't go there!) but we've all been on here long enough to know that this would fit very neatly indeed into Kenwright's modus operandi and it's absolutely horrific behaviour.

For all the on-field misery and the financial shambles, for me this is up there as one of the worst things he's ever done and I'm still absolute furious about it. If it can be proved in any way then he's toast.
