So, this guy... is really big in his home country. And my search to see if there were any news about his signing for us a week ago turned me into an unwitting observer of a mini-transfer saga, which may or may not have been resolved in the past few hours. Allow me to... er... summarize (did I mention he's really popular with the Azeri press?)

For people with short attention spans and/or lives - scroll down to the next post for the news

Since he's not so big in any other country, a few words about him: He's a left attacking midfielder, who has played with success as an AM and RM, but was a disaster as a LB. Born: 1992-04-18. Height: 180 сm Weight: 65 kg. Strengths: Ball controll, technique, flair Weaknesses: Physique, stamina, character. Broke through in 2008, when someone on Berti Vogts' staff noticed him playing for the reserves of Baku and took a gamble on him. As a result, he played his first team league match after being called up for the full national side at 16. Right now he's out of men's national team because he showed up late for the team bus. Vogts asked him what's wrong, Araz answered "I was tired", and the coach replied "You must rest then." He's been resting for 6 months now. :)

He's had trials with Rubin (Kazan), had training sessions with Bayer (Leverkusen), Udinese, Real Castilla and several Turkish and Russian clubs. Apparently we first became interested in him after he scored a wondergoal against the Scottish U21. A trial was arranged, he was supposed to go along on the Scottish tour for the reserves... and then his visa application was denied. His club's president went along with him on a personal appeal to the British ambassador in Baku, the ambassador got a signed shirt and a tourist visa was granted. So he was in Liverpool for a couple of days, had a medical, but has since returned. So right now we've (probably) signed him, but since he cannot get a working visa, he will play on loan at his home club for 6 months.

The press has not mentioned anything about the price, but here's what Naftchi's president had to say (words to warm Bill's heart): "We only want the best for Abdullyaev... We do not intend to profit from his transfer - in fact we don't need a single manat [the currency unit] from this transfer"

For the tl;dr crowd: Azerbaijani wonderkid cannot get visa, has either been bought and loaned back for 6 months or has preliminary contract on the condition he qualifies for a visa.

Here's what he looks like, in comparison with Gosling he's really scrawny:

He's 16 to be fair, Gosling was similar when he joined and he's pretty big now.

If his manager really said that "We only want the best for Abdullyaev... We do not intend to profit from his transfer - in fact we don't need a single manat from this transfer" then what a bloke... Sounds good, playing u21's when he's 17 must mean something?? (even if it is for azerbajan :P)

Odd to think why nothing's been on the os. Even if he has signed for us but gone back on loan to his old team, should be put up on there
