But do you still stand by....

"It would now be a rare thing indeed for there to be a group of people on television these days and all of them to be white"

I think the figures of National demographics are not wholly useful. There are more shows set in London for instance than many other places and though I don't have the figures I'd imagine the cultural and racial demographics in any major capital, certainly western, are notably different from those of the nation as a whole.

So any show or story set there would, or should, if done with that in mind reflect that. The national demographics have nothing to do with it as storytelling isn't evenly spread all over the nation.

You seem to be hanging everything on the word rare. I'll change it to rarer and move on.

The BBC is not meant to be reflective of London, it is meant to be reflective of the British population. And again, even if you wish to take London, East Asian people are not adequately reflected in this which suggests it is more based upon being seen to be representative rather than being based in actuality.

I suppose the James Bond thing will be the next in this discussion. Happy to say I do not want a black Bond or a female Bond or anything other than a white posh (or Scottish) Bond. I have the character in my head and do not want it to be dramatically reinvented. In similar fashion I would not want to see a white Shaft etc.

Make a new film or TV show with new characters and if it's good I will gladly watch and support it.

Interesting first post by @Everstone in the very tense and highly charged DCL thread

‘Would someone be kind enough to list all areas of conversation forum members aren’t allowed to joke about?
It’s getting a bit dull reading the virtue signalling tripe coming thick and fast.
Are people with metal health problems allowed to laugh at a joke about mental health problems? Or are folks going to have a problem with that too?
Perhaps spending a little less time wetting yourself over other peoples opinions might help ?’

Are we all too sensitive these days or are we right to correct people if they cause offence?

Joke definition:
"a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline."

Yes, people should be able to tell jokes. Because...... It's a joke.

Now. Moving on.

Just look at how long men had the vote before women in Britain. A paltry amount of time.
We would all be led to believe it was forever. Even then it was about 50 percent still couldnt.
There is truth in your statement.

Restrictive speech on the internet is just a symptom of the deeper lying issues in society. Im sure if you lived in post world war one germany you might understand the consequences of a slippery slope.
Its all good and well writing about historical incidents and comparing them to the current situation. However, i live in the now and the last 20 years in Scotland have demonstrated a decline in many positive factors. One of which is the usage of words.
I like that we are all different, i dont like that being different gives you power over others.
Perhaps it would have been prudent of me to mention that with freedom of speech comes responsibility.
A joke however is only a joke, unless of course you can prove malice.
What do you think of the cinemas banning films in the uk?
All because of fear…
Dont forget history has a habit of repeating itself. Maybe we should be free to discuss everything.
And thanks for your well thought out and frankly fair opinion.
Post WW1 Germany? Personally I wouldn't equate debatable opinions being called out on the internet to the rise of the Third Reich. I'd argue that the freedom to stand on a podium and spew unfettered bile with little to no consequence did a little more harm than good in that particular case.

Nobody is curtailing usage of words - there are many corners of the internet and indeed the physical world where you are more than free to do so.

Are people actually having a go at the gender swap Ghost Busters which is hilarious. And the female doctor who? Ah here.

OK grand pa every movie and show that swaps genders coincidently all of them happen to be bad... nothing else at play here.

I do however object to programmes being laced with social lessons at every turn rather than being based on entertainment.

That's really to do with poor, ham-fisted scriptwriters and misreading of audience demands imo, not some wider sign of social hyper-sensitivity. I maintain that if a grown human being is genuinely angry that a fictional character is cast in a way they don't like, society isn't the problem

Unless it's being angry that Anne Hathaway is cast in anything

Well interestingly I saw a statement a few months back that the BBC is positively discriminating in order to get (I forget the exact figure - let's say 20% of its employees to come from BAME backgrounds. Not much wrong with this per se, but the %population in the UK that were BAME was something like 5% lower than this - so they will end up being over-represented. They seem to be doing all they can to appear to favour minority interests, but its at the cost of the majority - for whom they've dropped the ball.

Surely programmes Leads, characters and stories are still the same in terms of how interesting they should be generally regardless of the % representations of the typrs of faces that are assigned to them.

If I am interested in comedy, I am looking for the punchline not who delivers the joke, for example

Read it all and dont pick out points to suit your narrative. You sound more like the problem than the solution.
Freedom of speech is for all. Not just me.

It's ok for women to have strong roles isn't it? There's certainly been plenty of strong male characters through the years, a lot, lot more than women.

White men, have predominantly taken these roles. Get away from the BBC and look at the history of TV, it's most popular shows and it's lead characters. It is almost all exclusively white men.

Now we're seeing a lot more diversity on our screens, people are taking issue. There's still more than enough roles for white men, so I don't think you need to be concerned.
Im not concerned at all,if I see a well written well acted show I enjoy it no matter the gender of the lead performer. If you look at the history of TV you'll see many female successes,if you want to spend hours counting them knock yourself out. My post was in direct answer to yours over the decades plenty of women have been in lead roles on both TV and in film. Didn't Romeo and Juliet get equal billing?
