Are we going to end up with a pop gun attack?

He's got a point.

Rom is gone, noticed a few of you deluding yourselves that he will stay but he won't.

So we have .....

DCL, might make a decent target man but way off the standard we need. Inability to beat a man means he can't play wide.

Bolasie - may never be the same player, even if he does he's not a goal scorer and can't be relied on to provide enough quality crosses.

Lookman - bags of potential but too weak and needs a lot of development in terms of decision making and positioning. Worth introducing to team but not ready to start.

Mirallas- a 1 in 4 player

Geri - going I assume but if he stays he's shown he doesn't have physicality to start games.

Sandro - a lot to ask a young player in his first season in England to carry the attack.

In short we need 2 quality front men and better options out wide.

Lineker season was generally seen as failure though mate. I just dont think it's us and if it is adopted and struggles early on the crowd will be up in arms.

It's just not us, IMO. Not only that it's ineffective and excruciating to watch a team without a recognised front man.

..I'm just saying there's more than one way to attack. Lineker was a fantastic success as a goalscorer, the irony being that we failed to win anything that season which was sandwiched between title successes.

It'll be interesting what strategy Koeman and Walsh are working towards. There has to be a possibility that we go back before moving forward, especially if Lukaku and Barkley leave and new players have to bed in. Fascinating stuff.

My thoughts are that I like the formula of a hard working front 3, Liverpools problem IMO was that they never had the 6 players minimum that you need to be able to pull that off in our league. With continued investment in the right areas, we could. That's why I feel that Liverpool bought Salah, not to replace anybody, but to give them an option if Mane etc aren't there.

On the other point, I do feel that we seem to have decent quality coming in according to reports, but I have to admit, I know next to nothing about any of them that have been bought/reportedly bought, so naturally I am yet to be convinced. The bit that I do think works in our favour though, is that they will all have been bought by the same manager, who along with Steve Walsh appears to be buying for a system. They have targeted players and are getting them, as far as we can understand. That has to be encouraging, doesn't it?

Koeman used Pelle at Southampton like he would use Giroud, but is that the way he wants us to play? Dunno but I suspect not, time will tell. We do have a history of big target men, some of our greatest and most revered players have been just that, but its time to write our own history now, and if that means a switch in style of striker we buy, then I'm all for it.
Good post mate. But it's a big step for us and one no manager should do overnight. By all means experiment in a season in preparation for another one but dont go a complete different set up from one season to the next. It's too much of a shock to players and fans.

...and its a dreadful style to watch after the novelty wears off.

The MF looks very strong. The attacking unit looks terrible, and I have zero confidence in Koeman buying good attacking replacements.

I suspect we'll see a 6 or 7 players scoring 4/5/6 goals and it really not adding up to much.

I cant abide these 'false 9' teams or anything that doesn't have experts for a job needing doing. It looks like a bodge job....and the quality of players we'd likely get to carry out that system would be bang average.

We're not in a position really to go like for like in regards to an out and out goalscorer, we have to cut our cloth accordingly.
The window isn't open and we've already improved the team.
What or who exactly do you think we shoukd realistically be going after?

That's a fair point. Going for an out and out attacker right now might affect negotiations with a buyer for Lukaku as past of our pitch would have to be that we have to replace him. However, other pieces are beginning to fall into place: the focus on wide players who can come in and operate as a goal getter, a high sitting MF that would go with a false nine system.

I honestly dont think we'll see a usual shape for us this season in our attacking formations. This will be a departure. I think Koeman was fulsome in praise of Liverpool early last season when they were blowing teams away and we know he wants a full press game up front. I think we are headed down that route and we wont see a forward spearheading our attack.
Agree with a lot you say. However I still think you need a goalscorer spearheading your attack. Liverpool with their fanciful idea to try and sign mbappe have admitted as much, that they still need an out and out goalscorer to lead their attack.
I know you have been highly critical of koeman in the past, especially of his style of play last season, but ultimately he needs to be judged with the team when he has brought in his own players. I for one am delighted with focus on bringing in young hungry players to supplement the experience we already have in the side.

It might not even happen, but a discussion is needed I feel.

We should be looking to bring in ex-CL players like Giroud would be. I'd even go to palace and get Benteke.

That's what I'm saying mate. I'm fearing that will be eschewed this season and we'll end up with a three man attack that really cant find the net often enough and relies on the MF to to get the goal tally up.
