A lot of goals described as ;gifts' are not gifts at all...they're the natural result of a team being on the back foot for a long period and defending deeper and deeper, or conceding set pieces.

The two we conceded yesterday, had we had a competent goalkeeper in goal we wouldn't have conceded them, its as simple as that.

Thats not to say Arsenal may not have scored a goal in the game anyway, but looking back, as i say, a competent keeper doesn't let them in.

One has also to ask what was the point of bringing Kone on at the 89th minute?
These late subs really do my head in. Can see when you are trying to run down the clock, but when you are trailing? Subs when chasing a game need to be some time between 60 and 80 minutes: give the player some chance to get up to the pace of the game. Martinez's subs were a real refreshing change from Moyes in the first season: early and decisive. Seems to have started dithering a little more recently.

True.

But this palpably wasn't the case with the first goal yesterday

We had actually started doing a bit of attacking and had gained a good foothold in the game.

The cross itself did not come from a set piece, it was an innocuous enough looking cross which either of our central defenders or our goalkeeper should have dealt with.

Instead our centre backs wrapped it up and our goalkeeper stuck a great big bow on top of the softest of gift goals.

To be fair, taking off a fullback for a striker is a desperation move and not one you want to be doing with twenty minutes left.

Howard's fault for the goals, no question.

My point was that we don't exactly look more threatening with two wingers on the pitch.

Arsenal will challenge for the Title this season, yet we still carved out enough chances to get at least a point IMO.

It wasnt happening for Lennon yesterday and Ross struggled for space, if Ross was more on his game and we played Mirallas instead of Lennon, coupled with giving Rom more support things might have gone differently.

But yeah, if my Uncle was my Auntie and all dat.

2 wingers should give the team a more attacking shape, but I personally think we should maybe tweak the formation a little.

Coco/Robles
Coleman - Yags - Stones - Baines
McCarthy
Besic - Barks
Superkev ---------- Diver
Big stuff

I would welcome some variation from 4-2-3-1. It worked well to change things after Moyes but it might have run its course now as the same thing every game. We need to find a way to provide Lukaku with better quality service, he is our best chance of scoring, simple as.

Total conjecture, every one fit, off the top of my head.........3-4-2-1

Jags, Stones, Mori across the back.
Coleman and Baines up the pitch and either side of Besic and McCarthy.
Lukaku up front and then Barkley and either Mirallas and Deulofeu to support him in the channels.

Int the times today is a photo of Giroud scoring, with 5 Everton players around him, none getting anywhere near the height required to compete for the header. Do we not have any CBN's who get can jump and head a cross away.
Browning. I've criticized him, but he has great jumping ability and was improving.

Robles
Coleman Jagielka Stones Baines
McCarthy
Deulofeu Barkley Mirallas
Kone Lukaku

Never going to happen, but I think that could be a real successful team

The midfield does look weak but as an experiment it might work. The onus would be on mcCarthy to make the midfield role his own, and for the wingers to work hard. But this system includes all our best players and gives Lukuka some help. No Naismith or other huffers and puffers but quality players. We really need just one defensive midfielder too.

Then in December we buy Mani to play alongside Lukaku and hey presto its a trip to Bayern next season for us

Something needs to change. Other managers don't have to do any research about us. It has been the same formation now for three seasons on the run, it isn't working!
