Art

Smart that, very clever
I didn't paint it there for any other reason than it was all I had to paint on at the time. I had no intention of entering at the time because I don't like doing portraits and am not experienced enough, having only started painting a year ago. On reflection it turned out to be a stroke of luck because it's pretty obvious that you need an angle to get picked to go on the show as there are so many far better artists that I am, or will ever be, who won't get on. When watching Portrait Artist of the Week I always take a lot of screenshots of the sitter so I can capture a different pose. I think my Jon Snow (the newsreader, not the character) portrait got noticed because it was different to almost all the others submitted, not because it was particularly good. Having said that, my Will Young portrait was selected but didn't appear because the production company cast a wide net and, consequently, some of us get thrown back in. If it appears on Sunday I'll mention it here.

Decided to bite the bullet and enter Portrait Artist of the Year 2021. I had to send one self portrait, two other portraits and a passport style photo. I don't expect to get chosen but stranger things have happened
I thought the bottom right was excellent. Almost like a photograph. Keep up the good work. I have a brother who is a very good artist, paints in acrylic.

I take it you weren't serious. I'm OK but I'm not THAT good! I've done a few in acrylic but I live with my wife in a retirement apartment, coupled with the fact that I'm clumsy, I make too much mess so now only use watercolour, pencils and sometimes ink. I think the one on the bottom left is acrylic though. Is your brother on Instagram?

Not serious, feeble joke! There is a website that shows some of my brother's work though I haven't been there for some time. Will let you know the details when I find them.

Made it onto the wall this week. Weird really - there have been 17 Sky Arts Facebook Live Portrait Artist of the Week programmes and I had submitted portraits to 15 of them without once appearing anywhere. Then, last week, I go straight to being featured. The irony is that I didn't draw that in blue/black on tan paper - drew a negative of it in white gel pen on white printer paper painted blue, then used an app to turn it into a positive. Mind you, I did mention that when I submitted it.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm up against, here are some of the usual 1,400 or so portraits that have already been submitted. I haven't even started mine yet (deadline Friday). The one of Dannii Minogue showing the picture on the phone is not a portrait but her showing one of the posts made during the programme. The last one (charcoal) is my personal favourite. For some reason it appears twice.
