Art

I've learned that gouache paint is used by illustrators, and that it's somewhere between poster paint and watercolour. I'm trying to use it like watercolour but think I ought to use it as well as, because I have to wet the paper too much to remove it. I finished this last night and am not sure if it looks like watercolour or acrylic. I don't suppose it matters as long as I'm happy with it. I sort of am, but I was too heavy-handed with the whiskers so might paint them out. I shouldn't be too disappointed because it's only the second painting I've done, and the first using gouache.

Coincidentally, a cousin of mine who lives in Australia says she has a Shetland pony who not only looks exactly the same, but also has the same colour bridle. She asked if I'd call it Teddy from Down Under, but, as it was from a photo of a pony in a Paddock near Savannah in America, if I was to bother naming it at all, I'd call it Horse With No Name
‘A horse called Saville’?

I don't have an artistic bone in my body, i wish I did, but I don't. I'm ok at composing photographs but I don't class that as art, some do.

Friend of mine gave up a well paid job to follow his passion for art, it's not my taste but good on him for believing in it.

Another female friend, who I used to fancy told me she was finally getting married, so I said the usual congratulations and enquired about the lucky fella.

"he's an artist" to which I replied: "oh well, at least you have a steady job."

I googled him. His pieces sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds, sometimes millions, for what to me looks like finger painting.

It takes all sorts I suppose.

The thing is, anyone could paint that. Good luck to him if people want to spend so much on something a ten year old could paint. Some people have got more money than sense

Now I'm not sure I agree. Try it.

Ever look at early Kandinsky? Beautiful paintings. I'm not a fan aesthetically of the more abstract later stuff, but when you see where it comes from you can appreciate the craft. Often behind what you think is 'finger painting' is a lifetime of graft and skill to be able to develop a voice. You need to know the rules to break them.

I got my best grade doing art at GCE level, grade 2.
Not so much for the actual drawing in ink that I produced, but a lot of marks came from questions about the great masters.
Funnily enough I'm going to one of those art showroom presentations next week where an artist I like is going to be present.
Fabian Perez. One look at his trademark work and you think titillation. But to this novice at least, it is the atmospherics from his work that gets me every time.

No denying "some people have more money than sense" however the claim that a 10 year old could do it is clearly wide of the mark.

As others have said, what looks like finger painting to you and me has a method and an idea far beyond what I can grasp. (I wouldn't like to answer for you) For example, i know the art produced by the fella that married my mate above all follows the same process. He locks himself in his home studio with some snacks and drinks, looks at the blank canvas for however long it takes, then paints non-stop, usually about 20/30 hours until it's done.

Artists are special people, and they should be cherished, weather the work appeals to us or not.

And without knowing much about your mate's conjugant, I'd bet heavy that he could knock you up a pretty good vase of flowers for the sitting room without too much effort.

While that undoubtedly highlights the hypocrisy of the art world (and let's face it if it wasn't featured on the Saatchi gallery would it have gained as much traction? ), it's not the picture we're talking about.

Have a go at the one we are and post the results.
I was just highlighting the fact that art critics will accept anything they see as, or are convinced is an outstanding work of art. I haven't seen the ketchup painting but that's not the point. I also don't see the point of trying to emulate anyone considering I'm having enough trouble painting like me!

I'd not heard of Perez until now. I see what you mean, both about titillation and atmospherics. I didn't do art at school as I wasn't very good and was more suited to English, maths, technical drawing and metalwork. I wanted to become a journalist but when I only got a grade 2 CSE I lost heart. I was advised to try to become a civil engineer anyway but I was a bit immature for my age and took the easy way out when offered a job in Insurance in the City (of London), and proceeded to spiral up and down (mostly down) career wise throughout my working life.

I can only draw and paint now because it's obviously in my DNA (mother, two brothers and two sisters are very good artists) but I've had to work at it through trial and error. I don't think of myself as talented because I wish the results were better than they are. It's just something passed on that I seem able to do, like the crossword thing, that fills my time and makes me no longer want to go back to work during my retirement.

I'm so pleased I started this thread because others are helping me to see the wonders of the art world. Let's face it, it's better than talking politics!

I'm not denying he's talented. Maybe it's just because it's not to my taste. I don't use oils and am getting rid of all my acrylic paints so, unless I use household emulsion and KY jelly, I don't see me painting anything of that texture.
