2023/24 Ashley Young

So... he's not a short term anything but considered a starter by Dyche then, hence the contract?

And if he is a starter and costs us point is therefore detrimental to our attempts to salvage points, no?
Who said he wasn't short term? Of course he's short term! His age (and contract) dictates that.

He may well start lots of games, if, in the opinion of the manager there is no one better at the club? If there is someone better, or if he becomes too much of a liability, he'll be dropped.

I am genuinely struggling to see where the confusion is? We've done well this year. He's been a part of that. We'll probably look for more of the same next year. He's cheap, available and if the manager feels he can do the same again, so be it.

At a loss for explaining how the weakest link is the weakest link and we're having him around by choice, so I'll just say "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" and hopefully you grasp how Ashley Young should be nowhere near the team, in any capacity.

Is he cheap? I thought he was on about £80k a week. I’m certain we could find someone for a quarter of the wage who could do what he does, which is basically just stand in a position on the pitch and clear the ball when it lands at his feet. Also someone who we have a hope of seeing on the pitch past this season.

No he's a normal 3 year short term solution and a "backup" despite starting games in any role available, you don't get it.

I've no idea of his wages mate. But there's no fee, and a one year deal only. A new player probably wants a 3 year deal minimum and will come cost a fee. Assuming you're correct, Young cost £4m for the next year, given our predicament, I'd say that is the 'cheap' end of scale.

I don't know if he has done this in recent previous season end games, but when the two teams were walking out to lineup, he had both his daughters with him - I assume in case he calls it a day and they were there for his last match?

3 years? He signed in July 23, now extended until June '25. That makes it 2 years. No?

Perhaps have a think what's happened to the club, off the field this past 6-12 months? Then you might realise why Young has been offered an extension instead of us going out and buying the best prospects in the division below. This is our current reality. I am amazed you don't get this.

Signing a 39 year old doesn’t make sense for a club in our financial position, because we already know we’re going to have to replace him next year. It’s just kicking the can down the road. Nobody can convince me there isn’t a free agent right back out there under 39 that could come in and do the job that Young does.

I'm amazed you didn't get the sarcasm of the 3 years statement.

I've seen what's happened for the last year+ and I've also seen Young cost us vital points and goals. Amazed you think there's literally no other player we can loan in (or get on a free, like Young, he's not a unique case) who are fitter for the purpose than a decrepit pensioner.

Because it's illegal for Everton to look abroad - Ola Aina, Charlie Taylor (who people fawn over as he had his only good game against us last year) are two examples of out of contract players who, while limited, are already MILES ahead of Young, and have experience in the Prem (as Dyche chases that). There's more examples of out of contract U30 players who we can realistically get for the same/similar wage, on a free, with a view to having them for more than 1 year and with added costs of lost points etc.

No one mate. There are zero free agents in the world who play fullback that are under 39 years old.

Ive looked for 30 seconds on transfermarkt so I can pretty much guarantee you that fact.

I don't disagree. However, at the start of the season, the manager has set out to build a defence that is fairly tight for a significant number of games, and tbf, he's achieved that. Like him or not, Young was a part of it, so I think Dyche is looking for more of the same.

It's worrying that we don't look like replacing him, I agree. It is very short term thinking. But should we be asking a manager with 1 year left to go buying players on long term deals? That's partly why we are, where we are. To me it's far more worrying wondering what happens if Branthwaite goes?

39 soon, the same age as Baines. I’d rather Baines played tbh, even though he was on the slide he retired too early in hindsight.

Perhaps fellas who are out of contract aged under 30, are out of contract for a reason? Should we be throwing money at people like that?
The manager has done well defensively, Young has been a part of that relative success. Maybe he's just sticking to what he knows and/or shopping within his budget? Maybe he's been told "Sean, you're out the door next summer, and we're skint, so no 2, 3 or 4 year player deals please!"

It's all guesswork and football manager. The bottom line is that we're skint, with a manager who has 1 year left. And as poor as Young is, he's been part of a system that worked for Dyche, and it's not surprising that Dyche might be looking for the same again next year.
