I admit that whenever I have seen him play in previous competitions I have never been impressed.
However, I assume that he is not being bought on the basis of what he does in a competition every couple of years, but for his club week in and week out.
I would also say that the Belgian team consistently underperform considering the talent available. Wilmots must be one very poor manager and that may have an impact on how Witsel acquits himself.

I must admit that I do not know anything about his club form in the last couple of seasons.

It's been really really good mate, both in the league and Europe, Zenit looked very good in the CL this season

Barry - will he accept as a backup? Solid pro if he is staying for another year then will only do us good.
Gibson - kept on due to the home grown rule. Will probably injured most of the time. Backup player.
Cleverley - never a CM for me. Since we are buying better players he will be the first name to leave. Will generate a decent fund as he is English.
McCarthy - decent squad player but like Barry will he accept as a bit part player? His performances were pretty average for two seasons.
Besic - learning and surely a squad player of the team.
Davies - talent youth...think he will make it.

I can promise you mate Davies won't play a single minute of football this season under koeman. Just because a desperate Martinez threw him in to try and get some sort of positive reaction from the fans does not mean he is suddenly ready for the team.

If we are to sell anyone then i can see it being Cleverley (or he could be kept to be the osman of the squad) and McCarthy perhaps if he is replaced in the team. the main thing is options though, different midfielders to do different roles, barry can sit behind barkley / witsel, McCarthy and witsel can marshal the middle covering ground, barry and macCarthy can be totally defensive etc
