Why are people flapping about a Witsel holiday post? It was widely known he was on holiday - it's like a three hour flight or something to Liverpool, and his agent does the legwork.

He could be announced any time if it's happening.

He needs a loan out to a decent team that will play him regularly, atm can't see him getting the games here till he can prove he can stay fit and show form

Barry - will he accept as a backup? Solid pro if he is staying for another year then will only do us good.
Gibson - kept on due to the home grown rule. Will probably injured most of the time. Backup player.
Cleverley - never a CM for me. Since we are buying better players he will be the first name to leave. Will generate a decent fund as he is English.
McCarthy - decent squad player but like Barry will he accept as a bit part player? His performances were pretty average for two seasons.
Besic - learning and surely a squad player of the team.
Davies - talent youth...think he will make it.

Really get the feeling James is going to move on.

Koeman won't be crazy enough to bench Barry or get rid. He's got at least a year left and was our double player of the season. Besic has youth on his side and offers something different. Gibson has just got a new contract. Cleverley is a good passer and versatile.

I'm happy having Cleverley and Gibson as squad options, Besic knocking on the door and Barry and Witsel starting, assuming the latter signs. Won't cry if McCarthy moves on but I still think there's a player in there. Just don't see him as a Koeman type of midfielder.

He could sign everything whilst still away also, only needed thing would be present for the unveiling, and that can be scheduled for when he returns from holiday and is ready to go back to training etc

Keep Barry for another season as experienced cover, keep Gibson for the same reasons (and both are home grown which we need), Ship off McCarthy and Cleverley (both aren't good enough and have resell value), send either Besic or Davies out for a season loan and keep the other as a squad player (IF we sign Witsel and another top quality cm)

I'm not sure there's enough energy between Barry and Witsel, from those more clues up than I he usually plays best alongside a tough tackler who likes to sit in, like McCarthy but better I'd imagine.

I totally agree, some of the pessimism on here is off the charts, I guess our track record with transfers over the last 10 years or so is not great but I remain optimistic as the quality of players linked and the amounts of money we are offering is a way above what we have been used to recently.
 

Regarding any midfielders potentially being sold should Witsel and Mata arrive, I would sooner Koeman and his backroom staff take as much time as possible to assess the merits of all.

Barry Horne and Joe Parkinson stank the place out under Mike Walker.
Both players under Joe Royle where superb with Parkinson pre knee injury the nearest thing to Roy Keane in the league at the time.
