Transfer Rumour Axel Witsel

maybe he has another level in him (like how dembele transformed back last season for spurs into the rampaging force that impressed at fulham) - but witsel the past few years is exactly the type of player who just sits back and maintains possession. a controller, great for tempo and defensive security, but not going to do those things you say (unless koeman works his magic perhaps)

Whenever I've seen him play for Belgium yes mate he does as you describe.

However, at club level (and on occasions at intl level (Euros vs ROI perfect example) he is the type of box to box player we need.

@bluestevon will be able to tell you more, but when I've watched him in the CL for Zenit he is the one making those runs from deep, using his strength and good footwork to protect the ball (he isn't particularly quick whereas Dembele has a burst of acceleration), but can also sit and dictate the play. You put him in a three-man midfield with a sitter to break up the play but who can also pick a pass, plus Barkley, I think you're onto a winner, especially if we can get a playmaker for one of the wing slots.

Is he? Not from what I've seen.

Talking a minor improvement going forward from midfield, especially if we've signed Gueye too but thats it. Nothing major.

£30mill for a feller who's not too bothered about moving here, who's not really gonna make a huge difference IMO.

Bin him. Look for a playmaker.
Yep - agree with this, if we're paying £30 million we should be getting a really good upgrade. Can't believe we're still hanging on for him, the seasons a couple of weeks away!

I'm actually past caring about this one. He's obviously not keen. Let's not be his last resort. Pull the plug and move on whilst we have time

What he did do at Zenit was completely [Poor language removed] up the best midfield I've seen from a 'lower' European league for ages. Denisov-Zyryanov-Shirokov was amazing, Danny as well.

Sorry, that was a little off topic but it's true.

Witsel is alright, he's a pretty decent box to box player in the Dembele mould as pointed out. I think he's due a good season. No doubt if he signs he'll be injured and or gash

£30mil now doesn't get you Troy Deeney.

And by all accounts we're actually offering £24mil (give or take that's around €30mil). That's about right (in the current market) for a player of Witsel's quality.

well he didn't did he? they were all ageing and Danny got injured for about 18 months straight

From DiMarzio's article tonight.

"As for Witsel, according to what Zenit are saying, Juve never made an official offer for the Belgian international. There have been contacts with a club intermediary as Juve offered 15 million euros. Everton had offered 30 million for the player and at Juve's conditions, Zenit would not accept such an offer"

Goes on to say that Juve want matic so maybe they have given up on Witsel. Strange that its saying they never formally bid though, could it be another of his advisors trying to do a deal without agreement from Zenit?

Don't think they will even get Matic if 15m is their budget
