From todays Daily Star.........

TWO-THIRDS of Brits want to follow the French and ban burkas.

A YouGov survey conducted for Five News found 67% wanted burkhas outlawed in public.

And more than three- quarters of those quizzed aged over 55 back the ban, according to the survey.
French MPs voted this week to outlaw the wearing of Islamic full-face veils in public.

The law means women will be fined or jailed for hiding their faces.

And men who force their wives to do so will face tougher fines and up to a year behind bars.
Spain and the Netherlands are considering similar laws.

The French ban was passed by an overwhelming 335 votes to one, and the majority of France’s five million Muslim population supported the move.

Imam, Dr Taj Hargey, who runs a Muslim Centre in Oxford, also wants a ban.

He said: “They can wear any kind of black shroud, but their faces, if they enter the public domain, have to be exposed so that everyone can see who they are.”

I don't personally believe that women should wear the full veil, but a ban is sooooo unbritish. They're committing no crime. THey are not terrorist. More over, we went into Aghanistan so that women could have the freedom to wear what they wanted - or did we go into Aghanistan so that women could only wear western clothes? We need a better way to soleve this issue, if it really is an issue.

I wonder what the overwhelming reason for wanting the ban was? Now that would be interesting.

Herd Theory mate.

I'm not arsed either way - it's not near my village and what people do with their own culture in their own environment is up to them.

But let's be honest - women get no respect in these cultures. I'd like to think that the western world has evolved more to respect both sexes, and to allow freedom of emotion. I mean what's this bollocks about not being allowed to show affection in public in Dubai. It's madness.

You ignored the bit about vast majority wearing them of their own will, but carry on Mr Daily Mail.

Not that they get any chance not to wear them though right.
You may well find that many of the women wearing them in the likes of Iran,
would gladly discard them
while you will find just as many who wear them in the UK
doing so because it gives them a sence of belonging to a culture.
the same women would probably be the first to complain about it
in their own country,,,,IF THEY DARE..

You make some good points, but are you saying that its Britain's role to bring "culture" and enlightenment to these cultures? And are we so advanced?

  • I know of plays which couldn't be performed on stage without Government approval
  • I know of women who couldn't get divorced and if they did were entitled to nothing
  • I know of women being beaten up in their own homes being legitimate
  • I know of brilliant scientists who helped defeat the Nazi killing themselves because of their sexual orientation
These happened within the last 50 odd years when the west still used the term "civilised". So long as they're not hurting someone why is everyone so uptight, what we gonna ban next? Beards grown in a particular manner because its not done in the British way? Why not ban men walking around in dresses proclaiming to be working for God, now that's mad.
