Huge opportunity missed to stand in solidarity. Sad that they caved. Everything else now is just lip service.

A yellow card to Harry Kane, would have been the iconic moment of this tournament, its easy to wear rainbow shoelaces when your neck isn't on the line. They wonder why no footballer has come out.….

Fair play to Iran, respect.

Also, anyone whining about “their country their rules” is a bellend. They fraudulently bought this tournament knowing that fans from all cultures across the globe would be visiting their country for the biggest sporting event in the world. They did this so they could sportwash their regime, and have rightly ended up massively shining the world’s biggest spotlight on their human rights record and views on gay rights.

The culture argument is manure and peddled by self serving colluding sycophants. Respecting culture isn’t the same thing as colluding with assenting to a society, beating LGBT+ when arrested, 3 years in prison for seducing and 7 years + for a proven act in a same sex relationship.

When you think the worst that could happen was a yellow card to stand in solidarity it’s shocking that it didn’t happen. Loss of any credibility.

Teams who don’t show solidarity at this tournament will be looked back on with shame. That’s before the looking at the treatment of migrant workers.

Wales fans had rainbow bucket hats removed from them. A US journalist has claimed he was detained for wearing a rainbow shirt.

But we were told this wouldn't happen. That there would be tolerance for fans.

Cowardly approach from captains who backed down off the threat of what, a yellow card? Pathetic.

All the rhetoric beforehand and the words coming from the players. Should have boycotted in the first place. Fifa would have backed down if all the (primarily) Western countries had threatened to boycott.

And it's not a political stance. As someone's sexual orientation isn't politics.

I think it's spot on.

Will it be ok in the future if a football team wants to wear a fascist party armband to reflect who's in power in their country? The principle is the same: keep politics out of football.
Dave, nobody has been more titillated by your forum hi-jinks than me over the years but this is a mess of a post. I sincerely hope it’s a misguided attempt at forum edginess as opposed to a genuinely held belief.

You seem a wise enough man to know that the freedom to love as you see fit is not political ideology.

All it took was one team to light the touch paper and stay strong, it could have and should have been England, every other team would have followed, there would have been strength in that togetherness of teams and football together could have sent that message and took that stand. If they all followed and supported each other, it could have been a watershed moment iconic in standing up to injustice and discrimination. What are FIFA or Qatar going to do torpedo their own tournament, don’t think so.

It was bottled royally.

It's a mess of a post to suggest we keep politics out of football? I dont understand.

There’s a difference between promoting a political viewpoint and supporting basic human rights. One is political the other isn’t. I’m sorry you don’t see that.
Human rights is a political viewpoint. There's nothing holy about it. They're within their rights to believe stupidity because some long-dead dude said so.

I think Dave is right on this one. Couple of guys raise their fists on a medal podium, and the next thing you know everyone wants to subvert events that are organized for the purpose of bringing people together. Let's take our hats off to those two, respect what they did, and collectively say never again.

We're stuck with this venue, and we've had years to lay into them. Now that we're here, let's enjoy the month, then go right back to laying into them. There's no need for us to say anything. FIFA and Qatar are doing a lovely job of making themselves look like idiots. All we can do by opening our mouths is join them.

Gay rights are human rights. Not politics.

Of course they are. But here's the thing: FIFA...you know...the organisers of this event...wont allow stuff like that to be done. So, these gestures can never be done...unless of course...and I'd support any national association who did this...a participating country boycotts the World Cup and walks out.

Short of them doing that there's no use in all this posturing...and posturing btw about the wearing of a piss poor substitute rainbow armband.

I'd be delighted if they all walked out of the world cup tomorrow and then the media turned their attention on the UK Government and business trading with Qatar 365 days a year every year since it was founded as an independent nation in the 70s. But that wont happen.

Complete and utter cowardly shitbag filth.
Whilst the Iranians have probably chosen torture and death. This lad has lead his privileged and indulged "men" away from the danger of .....?a yellow card.
Principles are easy when it's safe. Progress is made by defending those principles in the face of danger.

Thoughts on Gareth Bale doing the same? No?

Jesus. Yeah, wouldn’t want to rock the boat. Don’t want to look like an idiot by pointing out that gays shouldn’t be stoned to death.

People HAVE been laying into the choice of venue for years, but FIFA were never going to change it because too much money has changed hands for them to risk going back on their word and being exposed as the crooks they are.

The one brief moment of solace in the build up to this dogmuck tournament was when players collectively agreed to take a small but poignant stand against the treatment of LGBTQ+ in Qatar, only for them to fanny out last minute for fear of a yellow card.
