Beer, revisited

Cains Dark Mild was a belter and strong too.

You got properly drunk on it, as opposed to tiddly, like a regular mild.
Until the Brothers had rained for a year or two, Cains very rarely made anything short of a good ale and even shortly after they were still good.

I'm not much of a lager drinker myself, however their Liverpool Pilsner was a nice drink to have in summer - apart from the dry mouth the next day.

Yep, they were asset strippers and nothing more.

Sold the building to their nan, the brewing equipment to their dad and much, much more; when they went bankrupt they simply restarted.

They're still at it as well, but that's another story. I remember them owing a well-known regular of the Tap hundreds so paid him in free beer.

Don't think anyone paid for a pint for bloody weeks! After a while they couldn't get any of the regular ingredients because of their credit debt.

Such a shame!

Yes mate it's lethal on the Royal Mile and the popular Grassmarket (where the pubs are dissapoiting IMO) as usual avoid the touristy bits or your wallet will suffer. I paid £3.60 for my porter and the same for Black Isle blonde which I also tried which was nice, obviously from a decent brewery.

One of my locals has just got this in : Front Row - Fullers.

Described as an Amber Ale, which from experience, usually means unpleasant tasting.

However this was really smooth, quite light and went down very well.

Don’t usually get much Fullers beers up North, other than London Pride, so this was a nice change.

had some Leipziger Gose in their brewery last week...surprisingly good as it's atypical of German beers being light (3.9%) and a bit sweet. But hits the spot nicely.

Technically, I'd actually barred meself, I wouldn't have gone back in. We saw some really unacceptable behaviour from the landlord. Told him on the way out, that it's a great pub, but I wouldn't be back. He said ' I can guarantee you that.' Fair enough, his pub, my choice.

Wow, I`ve had some heavy nights in there, albeit under the old licensee.

Never seen anything other than " high jinks " in there over the years ?

You know the fella has got a bit of a rep, I've seen him be a bit narky with people now and then. Now I like a character running a pub and I'll let a lot slide. You know me I've worked the trade for years, pubs, bars, breweries, the lot. But yesterday, he had a pop at me over nothing, fair enough it's against one of their many 'rules' but he was overly aggressive and physical. I'm a mellow guy in the main and I wasn't that arsed, but the wrong person would've sparked him. Then he had a pop at the fella next to us, eventually calling him out for drinking a half (of a 6% ale at 4 in the afternoon btw). Then he threw a table of 5 youngsters out as one of them wasn't drinking, she wasn't too well apparently, there was a little more to it than that, but I won't go into it because it's only a suspicion. Just bang out of order. I had a look at the reviews on Trip Advisor today, I know that can be a gathering of knobheads itself, but there's far too much consistency. It's amazing the place keeps going the way he carries on.

I think he’s got a rep a bit like Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, so some people go in the hope that he’ll kick off.

The licensee in the Albion in Chester can be the same. I’ve seen him be very rude to innocent race goers, who dared to try to get into the pub on a race day. ( they’re not allowed in, unless known or by prior arrangement. )

I must admit I’ve never seen “ crazy Dave “ kick off in the Dispensary in all the times I’ve been there !
