Beer, revisited

View attachment 50782View attachment 50783

I had couple of crackers last night in the Caledonian, by the Cathedral ( what a cracking pub, hadn`t been in for ages, totally dog friendly, there must have been six people in there with dogs, six cask ales on and a cracking juke box )

Navigation Brewery- New Dawn.

Stamps Brewery ( Crosby ) - First Class.

Both pints in perfect condition and less than 3 quid a pint !

Is that the one around the corner from the Belvedere Arms? On a corner?

Awesome pub! Did they have some kind of folky jazz band or anything? I work the other end of town buts it's a good job as I'd never go home if I worked close to the Caledonia.

Lol.

I know what you mean.

I only popped in on a whim, as I hadn`t been in for years and had an hour to spare.

There was no live music on, but I was only in there from 7pm - 8pm, so the music may have been coming on later.

What a great proper boozer, there was every walk of life in there, from fellas in suits, to crusties, with mongrels on bits of string.

The ale was perfect and £2.90 a pint, I`d live in there too, if it was nearer to home !

I hadn`t been for years and I`m really sorry now that I`d neglected it for the pubs further down Hardman St.

It`s back on my list now.

When we were living in Liverpool (at Univ Liverpool) this pub was hop-skip-jump away. I always liked it, and we went there on Christmas (not much else was open) and they were super nice and served us good food, cake, and pints. Definitely a great little place.

We would often frequent the Cambo (The Cambridge) because who'd drink there, before heading to the Cali as the ale in the Cambridge was notoriously bad.

I once saw Jess the licensee drinking a concoction made from numerous slops with a nail (like a builder's nail) in the glass. We stopped going after that!

Lol.

The thing with the Cambridge, was that all the beer was bad - real ale, Guiness, lager, all of it.

The only drink that was safe was the spirits !

* They did a mean breakfast on Sundays though.

If he was happy drinking slops - and even worse, a mixture of slops - then I wasn't surprise that the ale was badly, as his standards were obviously woefully low.

They ended up closing on a Sunday (and even sometimes a Saturday) because the students weren't about; it was a lottery if it was going to be open for not.

Jess barred me once as well because of our abuse of the jukebox and the effects it had on certain 'frequent' visitors. To be fair, we had lots of good times in there!

We had some great times in there too, especially afternoon sessions outside, when the weather was good and in fairness ( apart from the ale ) it was a great pub !
