Beer, revisited

Not been in here in a while. My apologies (although you’ve done well enough without my help.) two notes on recent stuff:

My favorite American pub/bar added a location at DFW airport, which is the one I travel though most, so I’ll be booking more work trips with long gaps between legs thank you.

And Abita just released a golden ale with flavors of earl grey and lemon called “Subtle Tea.” It’s a really interesting flavor.
Earl Grey is the Devil's tea, and I brook no argument.

Much prefer an Assam, Lady Grey or good ol' English Breakfast. Anyway, it's time to get back to the beer...

You ever tried - Kriek ?

Belgium cherry beer.

I love the stuff.
Last time I had Lindemans Kriek was in 'De 12 Apostles' just off the main square - opposite the Cloth Hall - in Ypres. Lovely beer in a wonderful bar!

The whole place is really dark and completely adorned with crosses, crucifixes, rosary beads, paintings and statues of the Virgin Mary - properly decked out!

The pictures of Our Lord on the back of the cubicles however, about a two feet from your face, do cause some anxiety when you're half cut and having a dump.

There`s a bar in Ghent called - the Quack Bar. ( or something similar in Belgium )

All the beer is served in glasses contained in wooden frames with a handle, that look like thistle flasks - hence the name " Quack " as in Doctor.

The rub is that these glasses are very expensive and the bar is on the canal, so lots of them end up in there.

Before you get your first glass of beer, you have to hand over a shoe as well as your money, as a guarantee that they`ll get the glass back.

So the bar is full of people with one shoe on lol

@Armel will know it.

I've drank Kwak a few times but never really took to it; I suppose the frame and the novelty of it may play a part although it does seem to be popular.

They are really funny about branded glasses in Belgium as the majority of places won't serve you if it isn't in the correct glass. This can be very annoying!

We were in a little place called Lo-Reninge and I remember wanting a Hommelbier but they wouldn't serve me as they had one glass and someone was using it.

No matter how much I said that it didn't bother me what glass it was in, they wouldn't budge. In fact, I've had a few instances in Belgium with their snootiness.

I was called 'uncivilised' in Poperinge when I ordered a bottle of Gueze - the size of a wine bottle - and drank it before asking for another within about 1/2 hour.

How was I to know that you're meant to sip the thing for the entire evening as it's still brewing rather than drink it like a pint in less than half an hour?

The purists reckon the right glass for the right beer enhances the flavour !

Must admit, I get mildly annoyed when I don't get served this in the right glass:
