Do you know how Guinness became so popular in Nigeria? It actually has its own factory because they consume so much of the stuff - third largest market.
Think Guinness was imported wherever the British stationed soldiers, so that's how it came to be in Lagos. Not sure beyond that, but you're right as to the popularity of the stuff over there.

Nigerian advertising rules were at the time (well... still are) incredibly lax with no obligation to make fair statements or promises.

So they made adverts with massive, physically fit black men stood there with a drink and pretty much said, "Guinness will make you strong like this."

It's popularity went through the roof and even when they were told to tone it down a bit they come up with adverts like this. The legacy is it's still hugely popular.
