Beer, revisited

I was in Belgium back in 2002(ish) and they were talking about how it changed dramatically after they were bought out.
They're back at their original location now and all is well...
Excellent white beer, not chemical at all. A favorite of mine although it's an almost a transparent brew these days.
You can't let it warm up though, like most other non-refermented beers.

I didn't know they'd moved breweries, so that'll have played a big part. I remember we were in a bar in Liege and the owner was talking about the mergers.

They said this was causing a lot of annoyance in Belgium as they were changing the location and blend of the hops in a few of their ales.

Inbev, the brewery that bought them out, wanted to cut expenses and streamline the production so they moved the brewery from Hoegaarden (a small village 15 miles south of Leuven, their headquarters, where Stella Artois is made) to Jupille near Liège where Jupiler is made (a decent Belgian pilsner).

The big difference was allegedly the composition of the groundwater used for the beer. They never got it right. Sales plummeted. So they moved back after two years, rehiring the sacked staff, using the old machines.

A lot of the popular beers are changing fast to a more international taste. Sweeter, less bitter, lighter in calories. All the Inbev beers are getting pretty bland. Stella is still ok, but Leffe has really lost its mojo.
