I agree. He spoke earlier in the week about passing being a key strength which we have yet to see. We played better when mina came on but that's because Godfrey shored up the left side where digne had (understandably) been struggling.Surprised at people's reviews of him. I thought he was our best defender today. Thought he covered well with aggression and pace when needed. His positioning could have been a little better on one of the crosses but other than that I thought he was rock solid.
Not sure where the shouts of him being uncomfortable on the ball are coming from. He looks fine on the ball to me, especially for a centre back. Can you imagine Keane or Mina playing left back?
He passed the ball with urgency and accuracy most chances he got, which is a lot more than most of our team could say. Had the agility and athleticism to move quickly with the ball at his feet as well. Remember, he did play in midfield at the start of career.
Maybe I'm watching a different player?
By 2024 this lad will be captain of England and probably not playing for us anyway. It's going to be 2024 and I'm still not going to be sure if he's good or not
I think there is always room for an old fashioned stopper Macca, but I think there is more to Ben’s game, he can organise and be vocal to his teammates, doubt if there will be any slackers around him once he gets his feet firmly under the table as a regular. He wasn’t at his best on Saturday, no excuse but how many were in this patchwork team that failed to function and get a proper grip of the game, despite taking an early lead.Funny one. Increasingly these days central defenders need to be comfortable on the ball with a shoulder drop or a good pass in them to get past a high press.
He’s more of an old fashioned stopper. A good player for the squad but is he a long term regular CB?
I agree - at CB it highlights his passing, which isn't his strong suit at this point. His work on the ball will hopefully develop nicely over time, because if it does we'll have a cracking little player there.
He's really not good enough when we have the ball to be a fullback in a modern systemI agree - at CB it highlights his passing, which isn't his strong suit at this point.
I personally think he could be a cracking RB, playing on his preferred foot, use his pace and size. Would be an absolute nightmare to match up on especially if he could become a good crosser of the ball as well.
With Digne back, and Mina and Keane having formed a good central partnership, I'd like to see him put back at RB - especially now he has his confidence up.
