2020/21 Ben Godfrey

Great player, physically and mentally ready for war. Love how he carries the ball out from the back when there is space ahead of him, too.

His reading of the game needs to improve - been a couple of times when he has pressed the winger in the absence of Digne but left space in behind. Needs to improve his relationship with the left back there but he is young and that will come with playing time. I think deputising at full back will help in the long-term but in this transition period the muscle memory is pulling him out of position sometimes.

As much as I like Mikky Keane, I think a tier-1 CB next to Ben God would talk him through a game better and he'll progress up to a new level.

Fantastic acquisition, massively impressed.

He plays much better next t o Keane or Mina than he does next to Holgate, I think that is down to him feeding off the experience of Mina and Keane. If he continues to progress the way he has been we will have some player.

Didn’t seem to have any of the positional errors he’s sometimes made when at centreback. Last two games he’s been solid there. Probably didn’t think he’d get to play so regularly this season when we brought him in.

There's a bit of the Seamus Coleman in the lad, in that he is very raw, but you can see real ability. Coleman came into the game late (and is probably an exagerrated version of Godfrey) but Godfrey didn't really go the conventional route of top academies. He didn't even start playing CB until 2 years ago. So while he's just turned 23 in a lot of ways, in development years he's probably closer to a 21-22 year old and that sort of shows.

When you first saw Coleman you could see he tools to be the best right back in the country. I see the same with Godfrey, he's quick, brave, aggressive, carries the ball well and passes it well out of defence. But at times he looks like a midifelder who is playing at centre back. I'm sure he will learn as he gets more time.

It's worth noting that John Stones has probably really only kicked onto that next level this season at 26. He has that brilliant run in 2018 I think at 24, then goes a bit up and down again, but he really looks to have nailed that spot down, and has been outstanding next to Dias this season. So there's plenty of improvement to come from Godfrey.

He was a bit shaky at Old Trafford and in one of the cup games I saw, but the last 2 games he and Keane have been much better.

If we’d got 7 points from the two Newcastle games and Fulham at home, which we ought to have, we’d be joint second.
But this is the point. People will say ‘we ought to have beaten these’ without considering the flip side. We’ve also won when it hasn’t been expected. You can’t have the best of both worlds.

To push on, we need consistency. And I think the biggest factor for consistency is squad depth. We just don’t have it yet.

I think we are expecting too much of this squad, too soon.

To be in with a shout of CL and still in the FA cup is a good return for this squad.

Ben Godfrey has been fantastic since he arrived, great attitude, leadership, strength, pace, ability & versatility has all shone through...

Been a great signing & he will get even better as the games go by...
I think he has been the best signing we made in the summer tbh, the only way for him is up and id love to see him get a Euros call up

I think third is unrealistic with this squad.

I admit I never look at the games we won and say it balances against the games we lost. My strong belief is we have overperformed against the top 6 and taken points we never expected but that doesn't counter balance against the points we should have won against the bottom 3rd. All that is to me is a missed opportunity. If we end 7th.. but beat the bottom teams and lost to the top no-one would say it was a successful season, but not unexpected. Beating the top but losing to the bottom and ending 7th is disappointing for me.

Do I think we should have beaten them all.. no.. but I do feel we should be 5 points better off.. that was before Fulham. West Ham and Burnley for me we actually should have won both. That's not even counting Newcastle twice and Leeds.

The result of scoring to draw a game in the 93rd minute is the same as conceding a goal to draw in the 93rd minute.. same result but different feelings. This season will feel like a massively missed opportunity if we don't take it home now.

We haven't ended 7th yet, but owing to the points thrown away we will need to have a remarkable run in to the finish line now. I don't want to sound negative as I believe we can.. same reason I believe we should be in 3rd.. this team IS good enough.
