My view is that a europa league challenge was a feasible target in the circumstances. I think we are currently outperforming. I’m not going to look at individual performances as there are too many variables that can impact individual results. Fatigue, injury, form, all of which can be mitigated by depth which we don’t have.

our points per game is excellent under ancelotti and we are improving. And more importantly becoming more resilient. I think to expect more at this point is unrealistic.

I agree with this by and large.. very fair statement from a helicopter viewpoint .. for me the devil is in the detail...

What I’m saying is fairy straightforward. We should have had 7 points from Fulham and Newcastle.
Ok that’s cool but using that logic then let’s subtract our points for the games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester.

I don’t buy that a necessary result of winning the games we should have is losing others we won deservedly.

Like I said, it’s the easy bits that we’ve let ourselves down on. Which bodes really well for our future prospects, if you ask me.

But you are happy to add points lost?

The point I’m making is that it’s logically incorrect to expect outperformance against teams we should struggle against but not expect underperformance against teams we should beat.

its flawed logic.

anyway I agree with the last part. it does bode well. We add more depth and improve the first team then we’ll be picking up some of those dropped points.

It’s perfectly sound logic.

Ok let’s look at it this way. At the start of the season how many points would you have expected from these:

spurs away
Liverpool away
Liverpool at home
Leicester away
Chelsea at home
United away
Arsenal at home
Wolves away

Just curious. For reference, I’d have said 9 points out of that lot would be par.
It's difficult to do that though isn't it, because at the start of the season you don't know what sort of form we're going to be in, or what sort of form the opposition is going to be in. I mean at the start of the season the idea of beating Liverpool at Anfield seemed fanciful in the extreme given the position they were in, but by the time it came round it wasn't really unexpected (by neutrals at least). Same with Arsenal, yes they have a reputation as a 'top 6' team but when we played them they were about 15th and being talked of as relegation candidates. I don't think it was overperforming to beat them at home, or Wolves away for the same reason. The same applies in reverse to a game like West Ham.

Anyway, I really like Ben Godfrey.

God Benfrey is doing a wonderful job so far. Carlo clearly loves him and he'll probably be captain in three years tbf. Can't knock him at all.

That’s fair but I think the detail is just noise.

It won't be just noise if we miss the CL by 2 points...

By the same measure your logic is Because we outperformed vs the teams above us we should expect to underperform against the teams below? That logic is far more flawed. This isn't Star Wars where everything must be in balance. It is for the very reason we were able to hold our own against the top clubs we should fully expect to win (or not lose) against the bottom... that is fully logical.

It really isn’t. If it was sound logic it would work the other way.
If you applied your logic with, say, Fulham in mind instead. From an Everton fans perspective they should be worse off than they are. From a Fulham fans perspective they should be better off than they are.

No. That isn’t what I’m saying. I’m saying you can’t look at individual results and that you should look at the long term. At an individual results level we might underperform or outperform expectation.

it’s too difficult to appraise on a game by game basis. And so we look at the long term trend (points per game). Which has us ahead of where I would have expected at the start of the season.

There’s no devil’s pact necessary to say we need to trade a win at Anfield for a home win against Newcastle.

Respectfully, I’m done here. We’re clogging up the Ben Godfrey thread. He deserves better than this unrelated to and fro.
